having just returned home from classes and the local shopping centers getting prepped for the onslaught of Katrina, I was stunned by the lines at the gas pumps.

Turning on CNN to watch updates of the evacuation, I was struck with the thought of why the Public Schools and colleges in the whole state haven't been shut down for the next couple of days.

Especially the state universities and community colleges which are attended by commuting students. What an unneccessary strain on the gasoline supplies that evacuees will need over the next 24-48 hours.

College students in my area drive as much as 60 miles round trip to attend school, and the university I attend has over 20 thousand who commute out of a 30 something thousand students.

Where are the Leaders in our state government, and what other forward thinking ideas could be enacted to further lessen the burden on supplies that will be needed over the next week?
