I'm now locked in a debate / argument with the aforementioned Sharon about wannabes. A wannabe is someone who feels alienated from one or more of their limbs to such an extent that the strongly desire to have them amputated.

Sharon's position is that this is purely a matter of choice and that they should be allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies. My argument is that, whilst I fully support everyone's right over their own bodies, these people are actually self-harmers and are, through no fault of their own, mentally ill and need help, not amputation.

In a civilised society (which I hope we are) I think there's a recognition that in some circumstances people should be protected from themselves. That's one of our duties to our fellow man. We accept that it is legitimate to deny freedom to people who would harm themselves but who are no danger to others by committing them to psychiatric institutions and I would say that a wannabe (a hardcore one anyway) falls under that category.

I'm with you mike.

I watched a documentary a while ago where people who felt this way drew pictures of how they percieved their bodies. It was really sad. There trauma is real. They need help. I just hope such help and support exists. x
