Oh, those British!

Looks like it's not only the nutcases on our side of the pond that have decided to redefine a few key words in English...

Jul 20, 0902 AM (ET)

LONDON (Reuters) - The word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.

Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.

A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children. "We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.

"But I recognize that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.

The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.

OK, this has gone just about long enough. "Deferred success?" Puh-leaze! I'm sure the bosses of these future oh-so-coddled pupils will defer their paycheck instead of firing them too.

I don't know.
There may be something to that.
I mean, even you and I don't want to say we failed something. We say to ourselves "well, that didn't go too well, did it?" and try again.
But a young brain isn't highly developed enough to function that way.

I may adopt that phrase myself.

I agree JF, you have to draw the line somewhere. School isn't just academics and learning to overcome "failure" is vital.

I agree somewhat with JayR63 in what we say to ourselves sometimes but... I say "well that didn't go to well" and "I am going to try again" because somewhere I learned to get up from falling down. It wasn't because I "deferred to succeed." Absurd.

Well a word it just that

It is the meaning behind it. "YOUNG MAN YOU DEFERRED SUCCESS!" Will soon equal YOU FAILED! I think we can teach people about why they failed and how to avoid repeats. Finger pointign never works no matter what words you use.

A big dude can grab you, put a fist to your face and say "want hot kinky sex?" and the meaning is not the same.

Good sense! As are the following:

short - height deferred
tiny penis - manhood deferred
A Cup - Boobage deferred
British PAT - Logic deferred

So does this mean that my failure to have orgasms on occasion mean that my pleasure was deferred?

Disclaimer - the failure to have orgasms has nothing to do with mi_mwpm or his luv abilities :^

JayR, JayR, JayR... part of the dark side you are. Telling yourself that things didn't go well is a self-preservation technique. Having someone else tell you that you didn't fail, but you "deferred success" is setting you up to never know that things didn't go well, at all, and you might lose your job over it.

NOW WE WILL HEAR FROM THE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GREAT STATE OF MARYLAND

Its the psychology of teaching children. Their brains will fully develop around age 25-30.
I know I still carry the idea that I'm not good at math.
I failed it and that was it for me.

I think telling myself that I will do better next time is more of a positive attitude, not self preservation.

Somebody has to voice the dissenting opinion in this mutual admiration society and it might as well be me because (to use another self-image catch phrase) I AM SOMEBODY!

oh, wait, I'm not finished.
They're not morons.
They understand the concept of job performance and being fired.

MI, I saw that news bit,and it drove me nuts too.

What I want to know is, what do you call it when you defer your success indefinitely?

Yea, and I'm not overweight, I'm undertall, you know, to short for my body weight. If I think I'm 6'2" then I'm not fat. By the way, I got that one from Garfield the cat.

Silly, just silly. None of this 'deferred success' crap. I FAILED Thermodynamics II - big hairy deal! I went back and took it again (besides the whole purpose of college is to teach you to learn to deal with frustration...). The people who want the term 'deferred success' are probably the parents doing their kids' homework. Badly.

Ack!

The next time I go to a major league sports event, I'm going to yell, "Hey! Stop deferring your success!" instead of "You suck!"

I wonder if my warm, encouraging words will make my teams do better? LOL

I think JF and JayR need a timeout...lol

I see both sides. How about offering encouragement while teaching them you can't win every time? Just a thought...
