Missed Milestone (and travel travails)

Well, well, I didn't notice that my last post was number 200 in this bizzare little journal. Of course, since the train wreck has pretty much been cleared from the tracks and I've dropped back off the "most popular" list it doesn't look like many people are actually still reading. Back to square one on rebuilding an audience.

Did I ever mention that traveling sucks? After an uneventful flight that actually got in early, I arrive at Avis to discover that my preferred rental isn't assigned and I have to go inside. Seems that my driver's license number was wrong in the system and it took them 20 minutes to figure out how to fix it so they could rent me the car. Since it was 10PM Central by that time I was really happy that I didn't have to go searching for a car with another agency and they did give me an "upgrade" to a brand new (4 miles on the odometer) Grand Prix instead of the slightly smaller G6 I'd reserved.

With my spankin' new car in hand, I hopped on 294/94 for my drive to the hotel and everything seemed back on track. Got to the hotel in about 20 minutes, but instead of a smooth check in I find they've just switched franchises, and requisite computer systems... they have rooms, but they don't know if they're really available since the computer is showing inventory they absolutely know is occupied. Since it's 10:30 the front desk staff isn't really into the concept of knocking on doors to see if someone's in the room either. After 30 minutes or so the night manager is about to put me up at another hotel for the night, but when he calls them he finds out they're having room troubles of their own. He finally makes the executive decision and puts me into one of the "model" rooms. It's nice enough, but half the light bulbs are burned out, the USA Today was from August 31, the TV in the bedroom is missing, and the TV in the living area was missing the remote - at least it was until I raided the room across the hall that's in the process of being remodeled . To top it all off... I can't seem to send email over their wireless network for some reason. I can connect to and ping the SMTP servers I use, but I never get through on any of them. ARGH! Never had this problem with a public network and really don't need this aggravation at 12:30 AM. Grrrrr.

If tomorrow at the client goes like tonight, I'll be ready to kill someone/thing.

I do not miss my traveling days.. Nobody ever got anything right. Almost bought a Winnebago to make my life easier.

best wishes on the rest of your trip

Mi -

Please don't kill anyone. I don't think you'll be able to blog from jail.

I hope the rest of your trip goes better than the start of it.

Methinks it's time for you to start composing some complaint letters to the car rental agents' and hotel's head offices. LOL

Hope today (Tuesday) went better than your car and room acquisition on Monday eve. At least we didn't hear about you on the news today.

MI, it sounds like you have been "Barbed."

Your travel reservations weren't made by a blonde secretary with ADD by any chance, were they?

Don't kill anything you aren't prepared to eat.

Jeeze, what a comedy of errors. Sorry it took so much outta your day.

Good luck with the pop list. The comment mongers won't let you in I fear.

(unless you join in their game and beat them at it).

Good Afternoon JF. Take heart. There are those of us who will continue to still stop by and read your blog. In addition to the comment mongers mentioned by keith, the change in topic and tone along with inconsistent blogging may have contributed to the decline in the popularity of your blog. Once your blog consisted of tittlating and funny stories of sexual encounters in the front seat of a Mazada with jokes about cajunpet circling the parking lot, now it is complaints about travel and more mundane aspects of life. Please don't misunderstand, I am thrilled the trainwreck has been cleared and I am quite sure you will do your utmost to prevent such future derailments, face it if your goal to be back amongst the most popular, just like the Eagles sang "Give 'em dirty laundry". Otherwise know there will always be a small contingent of us who stop in to check on what's happening with you.

Don't worry about the popularity list. It doesn't matter. Besides, you are still listed in the Top Ten of Male Blog. That certainly counts for something. And as you can see from the comments, you really don't have to rebuild your audience either. We are still here.

Don't let the comment whores change your blog.

I will say passing 200 comments is fantastic. I just got over the 100 mark. That's why I've been away from here... too much partying going on down in my end of the neighborhood.

Hang in there, my friend.

Thanks for the support - travel and blog - folks.

I wasn't planning a "comeback" to the most popular list, just lamenting how quickly my views fell from 1000+ to, at the time I wrote this post, around 25. I'm seeing a couple hundred views per post now and that's where I was before the train not only derailed, it burst into flames and took out two towns to boot. I can live with that.

Of course, now that the wreckage appears to have been cleared, I could go back to posting "fun" things... just the participants would be a little different.
