You'll call me an idiot!

So, I'm walking home late last night (or early this morning) from hanging out with friends. I live in an urban area, so at 3:00 a.m. the only people on the street are prostitutes, hustlers, panhandlers and idiots like me. I only have two blocks to walk.

I walk by this guy sitting on the sidewalk. I recognized from one of the bars we visited. I recognized him because he tried to interest me in a ring he wanted to pawn off for cash.

I'm thinking that this kid doesn't look like a typical hustler. Nicely-dressed, clean-cut, nice-looking and able to carry on a conversation, complete with full sentences. But, of course, he needs money for a taxi.

Conversation goes like this:

Me: "Sorry, dude, I have no cash on me (which was true)."

Hustler: "Well then, I guess I'm staying at your place."

Me: "I only have one bed and no couch." (just moved into my place and haven't bought furniture yet, except for a bed) (I'm thinking this will not be an incentive for him to stay at my place.)

Hustler: "Just don't molest me."

Me: "I'm not a molester."

Me: "Oh, by the way, I've never paid for sex, and I don't intend to start anytime soon."

Hustler: "I don't want sex, I just want a place to sleep."

Okay, if this were a scene in a movie, this is the point where you're screaming at the screen: "You stupid MF'er, don't do it! You're gonna end up with your condo trashed and valuables stolen. Images of me lying in a pool of blood with my throat slashed, or at least a swollen face from getting the shit beat out of me.

But my intuition (based on factors I mentioned above (and others) was that this dude was just down-and-out and not looking to create any trouble.

Twenty minutes later I'm lying in my bed with this guy next to me as he bared his soul - dealing primarily with his wife, who left with twin sons, among other trials and tribulations.

Conversation turns:

Hustler: "Just to let you know, I like women. I only get my dick sucked by guys for money."

Me: "Dude. It ain't gonna happen. Remember, I'm just offering you a place to sleep."

Hustler: "Cool. I was hoping you would say that."

Michael (formerly referred to as hustler) left a few minutes ago. No drama, no sex (didn't even touch each other except to shake hands when he left), no money exchanging hands.

I'm not sure what I am taking away from this experience, but I'm sure it will be front and center in my mind for a while! Ever done anything that, for all practical purposes, was just too risky or stupid?

No, I haven't. However, I do believe everything in life happens for a reason. Who knows why, but this was meant to be.

I also believe everything happens for a reason. Hopefully this one doesn't become a bad reason.

I can't say why it happened, but there is probally one man today who feels his burden is a little lighter from what you did.

sometimes all it takes is one person treating you with decency to make a difference.

It would be nice if that were the norm, and not the exception, wouldn't it?

I picked up a hitch-hiker on the way to a job once..(a single deal three day construction job)...and over the course of the drive asked if I could use some help. Well, I was short handed so we agreed he would stay and help with the project...I would pay him, feed him and deliver him to jis destination when we were done, only an hour away from the job.

Long story short...we kept in touch and I got him to help on many projects over the course of 4 years.

I think I'd get a new bed...I would have been totally creeped out.

I think if I were reading this post by someone else, I'd probably feel the same way, but it didn't creep me out at all for some reason.

Its as almost as if he wanted you to offer to pay him for it. I dunno...I don't get it...I'd feel very creeped out and jumpy. New bed! I'd lie awake in it while thinking about it...dwelling on it...getting creeped out...not sleeping..etc.

Hmmm...which doesn't really explain my lack of sleep problems as it is. lol

Nah, I think a hustler will ask outright. My sense is you don't need to offer to pay.
