Socrates Wisdom on Rumors

Bearing in mind I dont join in the warring that appears to be going on here in blogland, just thought I would share a email I received not long ago.

Keep this philosophy in mind the next time you either hear or are about to repeat a rumour.

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.
One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?"
"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?" asked the acquaintance.

"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it."

"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"

"No, on the contrary ..."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, even though you're not certain it's true?".

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued." You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really ..."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?"

The man was defeated and ashamed. This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

Nice one ... I shall do my utmost to keep it in mind.

I always liked this recommendation: "Keep quiet and let people think you're a fool rather than speaking up and proving it"

Oh and maybe "Speak at work when you're angry and you'll give the best resignation speech of your life"

Madkitten, thank you for the reminder !!! Gossip is so prevalent in society, the workplace, and just about anywhere else you can think of !!! It causes much more damage than we realize !!! Peace !!! Cabo !!! P.S. Stan, I'm not sure, but I think MK may have included the picture to remind us, what you see and hear are many times false. The picture is a fake !!! I read about it, and the article said the pic is a composite of the guy hanging from the chopper, added to the shark pic !!! Cabo !!!

Socrates, NOT a gossip! Nice pic of the gunship too by the way (they don't call me eagle eye for nothin' ya know!). Not as nice as the pic of you in the denim shirt tho(!). I heard the same as cabo about the pic, the e-mail I got with it said somethin about trainin exercises of the coast of south africa... dubious at best.
Stan has got the scariest mug shot I've seen yet by the way (only coz I'm a guy tho).
Gossip is the most dangerous thing humans posses. Society however is absolutely riddled with it. When you bear in mind that gossip used in certain ways can spark conflict, hatred and even begin religious movements (don't even get me started on that).
For example, I heard that, during the last government census, if at least 10 000 people put down Jedi as their religion it would have to be legally recognised as a religion. Yeah right! Just call me Darth Noxious!

Thanks everyone, it just seemed like a good post to make at the time, yes the picture does do the rounds I got it under the title of bad day at work, but it just proves you cant believe everything you see, and sometimes a whole bad thing, is made worse by lots of little bad things.
