Endangered US Wetlands

Category: News and Politics

This was a great article a while ago on CNN. Personally I don’t think there is enough public awareness about this subject and to see that they have stated that government protection of wetlands has been decreasing over the past 4 years disgusts me. The current administration has turned there backs to the preservation of the environment pursuing interests in energy and exploitation of domestic natural resources. Wetlands such as the ones mentioned in the article surrounding New Orleans have been dredged for new waterways and the exploration of energy sources. The wetlands have been shrinking in this area causing excessive amounts of erosion in the area. These wetlands act as a natural barrier to protect from hurricanes and other severe types of weather. As you could see with Hurricane Katrina, the current state of the wetlands offered little resistance against the enormous storm.

There are several other issues pertaining to forestation, steel production, air preservation and other issues dealing with the environment that have been neglected as well. These issues have not been covered lately in the news, but I will do a little research to see if I can dig up some of the old stories.
