A Family Tragedy
A Family Tragedy
About 3 years ago, my youngest cousin met a great guy (Kelly) in West Virginia while she was in college out there. He had his own successful physical therapy business and he had a great personality. He was active, smart, and full of life. He was an inspiration and gave a sense of hope to all those he had helped through his clinic. They dated for two years and they did everything together. My cousin fell in love with him and she saw him as someone she could spend the rest of her life with.
Thanksgiving (2004), Kelly proposed to my cousin and they set a wedding date for Memorial weekend 2005. The whole family traveled to West Virginia to attend the big event. My cousin was so happy; she felt that everything was really coming together for her. They bought a big, beautiful, two-story house and Kelly had hired several new people at his clinic so that he didn’t have to work so many hours a week so he could spend more time with my cousin. The day after the wedding, they flew off to enjoy their honeymoon in Aruba.
At the end of July 2005, I received a call that my cousin was pregnant with their first child. The family was so exited to hear the news. Everything fit into place with Kelly’s business so that he would have time to be home to take care of my cousin. He went out and bought her a new car, one with a higher crash-test rating for the mother-to-be.
On August 15, 2005 I found out that Kelly was involved in an accident over the weekend while he was on a mountain bike outing in the mountains in West Virginia. He fell off his bike on one of the trails and broke his back. He will be a paraplegic for the rest of his life bound to a wheel chair because he suffered so much damage to his spine from the 8th vertebra down. He can use his arms and breathe on his own at least. He had to go into surgery sometime today to remove the bone fragments from his back. Everyone is still in shock. He will not be able to move back into their new house because they do not have a bedroom on the first floor. To make things worse, he cut expenses at his job by taking a lower quality health insurance policy that had a 20% co pay on medical expenses. He has been airlifted once already, he will have to be transported after surgery today to a local hospital.
Two weeks later, she lost the baby.
This just goes to show how quickly things can turn from good to bad. They still remain a happily married couple to this day.
