Have a safe Fourth...meaning don't finish the fifth...

.....I was watching the fireworks on the riverfront, in front of the Arch...the finale was absolutely awash in bright color. We have the VP Fair here in St. Louis, the fifth largest celebration of the Fourth in the country. From my vantage point on the roof of my building, I was reminded, somehow of all the colored lights of a midway at a carnval..a community Fourth of July fair...bright bright celebratory colors...a memory of childhood, when everything was so....big.
.....an occassional car would pull into the lot alongside my building, park, open the door and I would call down....
....."Please don't use my lot as a restroom..."
....."huh?....oh...you on the deck...Are you serious????"
....."Yes, I'm serious......"
ahhhhhhhh the joys of exo-urban existence....but as a boy.....the green grass of yards, the trees and hills of the county...
.....Memories....of apple pie, and the slow almost effortless way that a knowing knife trims the excess soft dough from the edge of the pie tin, falling softly in a cloud of white flour...
.....wondering, as a boy, what does salt have to do with something so sweet as ice cream?...the long wait, and sore arms as each child takes a time at turning the crank...that big chunky salt that usually only appears in winter...
.....that unforgetable "first" sip of beer, that rare taste of adulthood, that lives forever in memory, and seldom in a glass anymore...
.....extended family in the yard...the "big pit" constructed, and half of Noah's ark sacrificed to the sound of a double-header on the radio...Uncle's reliving younger days, a foot raised, a bottle in one hand, a tale long since improved working its way out of his mouth...
...Aunt's doing whatever it is they do...a watchful eye for Aunt Marion, the nurse, who occassionally gave us shots....( did she know it would permanently affect our feelings for her?)
.....and the dog...on his own agenda, surrounded by too many people, overwhelmed by an inescapable essence of food, and tested by every three year old with an out stretched arm, and the ability to walk...
.....the nose bubbles from too much red soda...
.....a required scrape, scratch or scab of some kind, or splintrs from sliding sock footed on the hardwood floors...gangs of kids, screeching and cascading up and down the stairs...
.....the deep respect of the card table, Grandpa and select few, playing poker...no banshee screaming around there, the fear of God in those eyes....
.....some of my memories, of my culture, but really pretty universal...I'll see it in the crowds that will fill my streeets tonight...Families taking advantage of a vantage point...a hundred cars, pulled in whereever to see the show, light a few of their own fireworks, have a drink or too....the streets will be impassable...until just after the end....and then, in ten minutes, they will all be gone...just bottles, and cans, and exploded paper remaining...the typical evidence of a party....
.....Katey's rain is blowing through now, mid-afternnon, we could sure use the rain, but I hope it doesn't interupt everyone's night out. Some child will be wide eyed, his first memory of such a thing...watching Dad run back fast from something that whooshes into the sky and then just.........explodes....into color and smoke. Such BIG stuff to someone just starting out. It takes a lifetime to really get what it is all about...memories....getting ready to be made...

Dang it! I told Katie to send that rain this way!!! We are sooooo very dry... Hoping for a beautiful and uneventual fireworks show without the fire!!

synn...
well, you should..............
wade into the crowds....
or hang out here, on the roof....
inside the fence, and with the dogs we're safe...
the boomers still sound
but not "in your front" like
"being there"
