The Things We Remember

I found myself thinking tonight about times in my life that have brought me smiles and about what kind-of memories I am making for my kids. Sometimes it seems like we're so busy surviving, that we don't take time for the laughs our souls are so thirsty for.
So as I walked down my own personal memory lane, the things that made me smile surprised me. I remember loading into the Edsel (yeah, we had one), dog in the backseat, me next to her, grandparents up front and going for ice cream. Keno would take a lick of my cone then I would take a lick. A double-decker, lime and orange sherbert. I don't take my kids to get enough ice cream...........
I remember running and jumping on my horse, no saddle, no bridle. My Grandpa would watch me from the window. When I'd walk in, he'd look at me. "You ride like the wind kid, like the wind" he'd tell me. I can hear his voice in my ear as I write this. I wonder if I let my kids know often enough that they ride like the wind?
My Grandma was so afraid of the water. Yet we spent nearly every weekend at the lake or the river. We'd put her in her orange life vest, tie a rope to it with the other end tied to a tree on shore and send her out to float. I wonder if my kids see me overcoming my fears, enjoying life?
Every now and then, I'd get to ride on the side steps of the ole '49 Ford pick-up (which by the way is a sore subject. Can you believe Grandpa sold it about 3 years ago for $350??? And he was the original owner. Oh yeah, he sold the edsel a couple years ago too. I wanted them both. And he says kid, like you know how the hell to work on them........ ). Hanging on to the side of that ole truck, riding into town, the wind in my face. I need to let my kids crawl in the back of my truck a little more often.......
So I wondered tonight. What memories might my kids have like this? Will they think of the time I loaded them into the blazer, drove through this one neighborhood with big speed bumps really fast, and we'd all giggle and hit our heads? Will they think of the week in Puerto Vallarta when the waves took my daughter's swim top away and we laughed so hard to suddenly see her sitting there topless? Will they remember our silly dog who chases light and tilts his head? What are the memories I am leaving them? I am going to ask them tomorrow. Ask them what times have brought them smiles. I hope they can't stop talking..........

If you're expecting your kids to want to sit and chat......you're REALLY losing it!
Not if they're normal kids.
Good luck with that!

When I asked them, NOTHING came to mind. Ungrateful little brats

lustcurious...
That is a very deep question... "What are the memories I am leaving them?". It's a wonderful question, and a good one for everyone to ask ourselves, about whomever we meet, or know.
