Life on the Inside...Student #3

Okay, here is my third student’s journal entry. For those of you confused, I’m looking for comments to help them gained confidence in their writing abilities. I’m not looking for critiques in their writing. For those of you that have already commented on my other two students’ posts, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Life on the Inside by Mr. JB

It is bull crap that we can’t take our cups to work anymore. I don’t see what the whole big deal about it is. The “square” cooks say that we eat out of them when we aren’t supposed to. So the “square” cooks put in an IOC (memo) on it and the inmates are pretty mad about it. Somebody told me today that they’re trying to talk to somebody about bringing them back up. If they do that, it will be a lot better than drinking out of the little foam cups that they give us. There is no reason why they should have done this in the first place.

Hi Mr. JB
I understand how you feel over the cup issue.
I know it doesn't seem right or fair, but in all walks of life, we all have rules and regulations we have to go by that doesn't seem right or fair. It is like that with people all over the whole world.
Somethings just can't be changed, so all any of us can do is accept it and try to make the best of it.

Never stop reading or writing, there are too many things for all of us to learn everyday.

Best of Luck to you!

And that is what I do accept it and move on. For me to you to know something are so petty and stupid like this rule about the cup. Reading is my down fall. How can I get over that? Thank you. J.B.

Mr JB, this is one of life's little challenges. Not everything is fair but you must go by rules. This will only make you a stronger person as you grow older. You have the strength and courage to overcome this. Good luck to you.

It is just really a small thing to a giant, but it is the principle of it. You're right, I'm already over it. Thank you for giving me good luck. J.B.

Mr.JB,

I can tell by what you have written that you are unhappy with the decision about your cups. Unfortunately, where you are at is a place where others make the rules. You have to follow these rules.

The best thing would be for you to do your best, to follow the rules, complete your GED and get out of there. Then you could make some of your own rules in your own home.

I'm not really unhappy, more or less aggravated at the rule. That does sound like a good idea of making my own rules when I get out of here. Thank you for your comments.

Mr. JB,

You have definitely stated what you wanted, what you do not like and maybe a way to fix it. You convey a very good approach to the cup issue. But, you have to also understand that somethings happen that we may not like and sometimes we have to deal with them. I do hope you get your cups back, I know what is like to have some personal things to comfort our everyday life. And to think, when you have that G.E.D. in your hand how comforting will that be????

Good luck to you and keep on it with your GED!!!!!

Mr JB. You have stated your concerns really well. I always try to see things from as many angles as I can, if only to make sense of this often crazy world we're in, which must seem even crazier inside, I guess.

Once I've seen it from all angles I can usually take steps to negotiate a solution. The better I understand a problem the more likely I am to sort it out.

Best wishes

Hey Mr JB,

I totally get what you are saying about the 'square' cooks stopping you taking your cups to work any more - it is just petty! In England, we call people like this 'Jobsworth's' - "It's more than my job's worth!"

I agree with Digdug's comments - you put across a clear and concise argument and come straight to the point. what you are saying is not about the cup, more about the violation of your personal property. I guess there isn't much in there that you can call your own, and taking your cup is like taking your identity. It is YOUR cup - a small thing but a huge issue to you.

I hope you do go for your GED as it would be a pure waste if you didn't. You are obviously an intelligent guy, i can see that. You have interpreted the situation brilliantly, showing you have a mind of your own - unlike the 'square' cooks!

Hopefully the 'square' cooks will come 'round' to your way of thinking, eh?

Sending you love and encouragement, Ruby. xxx

Thank you, on agreeing on Dig Dug's Comments. I never heard that saying, "jobsworth's" Well I learn something new today that will always help. I can see where you are coming from with the violation of personal property. Thank you for your comments. J.B.

Hi JB,

I thought you made your point very good and you write better than I do. I have been on my own since I was about 14yrs old. I am just now trying to get ready for my GED test, I have gone out and got program's to start as far back as middle school to get ready for it. From what I have read you are ready my friend. Everyone is right there are rule's we must all learn to deal with and live with. Think about it this way, you tell someone that this bed is your please don't sit on it, do you expect them to fallow your rule's??? It is the same every were with everyone and I hope you get your cup's back and go for your GED if I can do it so can you, I went from the street's to making a lot of money at what I do. You just have to say to yourself I can do this and do it.

I really don't see myself writing better than you, but thank you. I understand about there are rules we have to follow, but I'm telling myself this is a petty rule. I still can't do anything about it. Yes, I expect them to follow my rules. Thank you for putting in my mind that I know that I can get my GED and I am. And I hope that you get your GED as Well! Good Luck. You're so helpful. Thank you very much. J.B.

I hope you win this battle. From your writing I can tell that the cooks are being very petty and making life unpleasant for you because they look down on you. I hope you get to take your cup to work and that the cooks have to apologize. Good luck with the GED and your future.

Hello Mr. JB,
It is hard to understand the reasoning behind other's actions...and sometimes those decisions are made because other people have ruined it for the rest. It is too bad that happens, but it does. Most times we have to follow rules that we do not feel are all that great , but it is something that we ned to do and sometimes we can get them changed by coming up with alternatives.
By learning the reasons...and the ways in which to make a positive change...things do change for the better...education is one way to make a difference. Getting your GED is one way to be on that road to making a positive change in you..and in turn...You are an example to others. That not only that it can be done , but that it is a positive thing to do. It is a major accomplishment , that no one can take away from you.
Good Luck you deserve the very best!

HI JB, I'm Debbie. It's unfortunate that sometimes the actions of a few can mean new rules for everyone. I feel your anger at the cups being taken away is misplaced and should be directed at the inmates who were violating the rule to not eat out of them. But, what you wrote was your opinion and I surely can't argue with that. You have the right to be angry and to express it, which I think you did a good job of. You made your point, you wrote of why you feel that way and made it understandable.
Just keep doing it that way and you'll do fine. You have a pretty awesome teacher to help you this way. Good luck to you with whatever you choose for your life's path.

Hey JB I've got a few days locked down behind me. The small things wwhile doing time seem so large to a person. They overwhelm a guy. But they are lessons for life in the real world. Keep up the good work. Later Jim
