Happy Days

Potsi and Richie came to me as a pair…Guess you could have figured that out, huh??? And before you ask, NO I did not name them!!

They were puppies the first time I saw them. I attended a volunteer expo, which was my first exposure to the animal rescue I later worked for. They were in a pen with several other dogs, hoping to find new homes that day. Unfortunately, at the time, I had a dog already, and couldn’t take any others… Which is ironic, because Rocky came to me a couple months later!!!?

A year went by and they were still at the animal rescue. I was volunteering at an “Adopt-a-thon” in 1998 and Potsi and Richie were there again. This was their 7th (I think) “Adopt-a-thon” they had been to. It was hard to find a home for them because the rescue shelter wanted them to be adopted together. That day a woman showed up and decided that she wanted them on her farm. YEAHHH!!! So, after all the paperwork was filled out, she took them home with her. All the volunteers, including myself, were so happy that the two boys finally had a home. Unfortunately, our celebration didn’t last long. A couple of hours later, the woman brought the boys back, stating they weren’t going to work out because when she got them home, they took off running. Of course they were going to run! They had been in a pen for the majority of their lives. Our happiness turned to sadness. The head of the rescue said that this was the last “Adopt-a-thon” they would attend. No, they were not going to put them down; they were just destined to live their lives at the shelter. I swore that day that if I ever had any land, I would take those two boys and give them a great home.

Well, in 1999, my boyfriend (who eventually ended up being my husband ‒ soon2bx) and I moved to a house that had over an acre of land. I told him about the boys and he said that it was okay to bring them home. (FYI…By this time, I had four other dogs) I was thrilled that I was at last going to be able to keep my word. They got along with my other dogs, but they didn’t really warm up to my soon2bx at all. I found out that they had been abused by a guy at the shelter. However, they loved me, and the fact that they get to run.

They each have their own personalities. Potsi is more dominant than Richie. Potsi loves to chase the neighbor’s cows when they get too close to the fence. Richie loves to jump on top of things. In fact, he likes to eat his food ON TOP of his dog house.

Now, 7 years later, they still love me, but never liked the soon2bx. I guess I should have paid more attention to them about that!!!!

I can't better you I have only four dogs and two cats.

What a great story. Lucky for them they were with Rescue and not the other "shelter". Dogs are great, they give love unconditionally; all you have to do is give them the opportunity.
Seeing those faces, you have to smile.
