Selfless devotion?

If someone says on their profile that they are selfless and helps others selflessly, would you believe it?

If they were truly selfless then they wouldn't have to "put it in lights" for everyone to know it, right? Rather, they probably wouldn't even notice it and it would be the feedback from others which would demonstrate it.

It almost seems like he/she is trying to appear selfless to reep some kind of rewards and potential benefits of the admiration and adoration of his/her peers. This by definition then, would NOT be altruism.

I just wanted to know what everyone thought.

if one is truly selfless then it is for the sack of doing for others and if it is stated that they are selfless then they are doing it for reward and that is not selfless because they are getting some thing out of it
one does for the sake of doing and not for the rewards or eknowledgement of how selfless they are then they are truely selfless

Someone who truly is selfless and helps others does not seek the attention of others, nor do they seek approval or acolades for their service. They would be besieged with requests for help and those looking for a handout. I believe in the "good book" there are references to those who "beat-their-own-drum" Beware of such individuals. Once you get to know someone you will quickly determine their character. Character and morals are an acquired trait, like respect one has to earn them....

I only use profiles as a guide...I find out more about a person after chatting with them for a while.

I learned a long time ago that talk was cheap. If you believed everything said than 99% of the men on here could go for hours on end and 99% of the women could give blow jobs better than a French cortisan. Actions speak much louder than words.

And yes, you are right. If they were truely selfless there would be no need to write that on a profile.

Actually...someone who is truly selfless, wouldn't even post a profile...they'd be expressing a desire they'd like to fulfill for themselves...and by the very nature of doing so, negate all selflessness, and vanish in a puff of logic.
