Programming Still Good

I just had to note this cause it was so interesting to me.

Today I was watching some children's programming. Not my favorite thing but hey, the munchkin likes it lots and it won't hurt me.

In the midst of this one program...the main character met up with a Zen Froggy. The Zen Frog did the whole routine. He had the voice down and he had the hands positioned just so. Then when he spoke he sounded like any one of the dozens of martial arts masters I've seen over the years.

The Yoda Frog was spouting his wise advice in that jilted way all those zen masters do and I'm thinking...just what are we saying to our kids. I'm hoping the idea was diversity is important and that it's important to listen. But it could be just that you listen to these people that talk this certain way. It seemed sooooo stereotypical. Would I have even noted it if the character had talked to his mom or his dad or his grandma or kindly Mr. Higgins down the street in that way? I don't know. I really don't. But I have to admit, I liked what the zen froggy said and how he said it. Stereotypes aside, it made me feel good that there are some people still doing learning programs. Ones that actually teach your kids instead of just fluff. Don't get me wrong, I like fluff for fluff's sake. But if my boy's gonna watch the idiot box, I would like him to have some positivity and learning in the mix as well.

I still tune in to Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street sometimes... not everyday; maybe once a week or so. It's just so nice to return to a "safer" time... when people were nice and no one was old enough to know about ego!

I remember those times. Watching Mr. Rogers...wow...haven't done that in years. And egos are the hard part...you're right.
