Heart Gifts

"Heart Gifts" a poem by Helen Steiner Rice

I can't share this beautiful poem because the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation will allow it's reprinting for personal use only. Putting it here would be for my personal use but it's also an open forum so figured it's best not to tempt the fates to have a copyright issue at hand LOL. If you get a chance to look it up, it's worth a read.

I think "Heart Gifts" is probably my favorite poem. There are many poems I enjoy but this one stands out in my heart and my mind. It talks about those little heart gifts...love, kindness and thoughfulness. All of them cost nothing to give but the rewards to both the giver and the receiver are immeasurable.

I have a friend on here, spunky, who has had me thinking about this constantly for a little bit. You see spunky put a blog up to have his friends wish his mum a happy birthday. It was so sweet and thoughtful and of course lots of us sent out a little birthday wish to her. This was done so he could print them out for her to read.

That was one very unique birthday present/card and the thoughtfulness really touched me. My point in all of this is it cost nothing but a few moments for him to let us know his plan and then for everyone to say happy birthday in their own special way. The happiness for his mom though...receiving all these thoughts from others she didn't even know from all over the world...well that, my dear friends, is priceless. This was one big heart gift.

I was talking to a friend in the chat room the other day. He's retired and went from a very stressful job to being at home. He wants to give back. Do something that matters. Not sure what he will do but being a homeless advocate was on his list, as was going back to law school. Giving is part of him...he has a need to do something positive. Going ahead and giving back by helping others...is a heart gift.

I could go on and on and on with this subject but I just wanted to say that, to me (and I'm sure to a lot of you as well), it's the heart gifts that mean the most. The ones that stay with you forever. The ones that spring to mind when you are sitting there daydreaming about bygone days.

What's the best heart gift you ever received?

Do you like surprises?

Would you rather give or receive?

I would rather give than receive. Just the way that I have always been. I love seeing the surprised look on my friend's and family's faces. Just a big heart I guess.

Beautiful poem...

They are the priceless things in life
For which no one can pay,
And the giver finds rich recompense
In giving them away.

So very true...
