Start of untitled story

“You’ve never done this before?” Brian stated more than asked.
Startled chocolate eyes met sea green, “What makes you think that?”
Brian Arnold leaned back into the taxi door, said nothing for a full minute studying the short slight pudge of a girl with a mass of auburn-gold hair, button nose with freckles spread like stars across her cheeks and nose. She had a generous mouth; now set in a stubborn line. She looked as if she were trying to physically go into herself, legs squeezed together, hands in her lap, arms and shoulders pulled in. No contact with him at all in the confined space of the taxi.
He reached over and felt her flinch as he grabbed her cold hands, “Daniel, your hands are cold as ice, yet you are perspiring. You look at me with scared eyes. I had to pry your hands apart, and you’re overcharging and don’t even know it. So what’s got you so desperate that you’d do something you’ve obviously no taste for?”
“I don’t see why that matters, I offered you a service and you accepted it. It’s not to late if you don’t really want to.”
“Mmm, I think I’d enjoy finding out what is under that cold, self-protective sell--even without the agreed upon price,” Brian commented; lifting her hand palm up, sending shivers up her arm and pulse in her abdomen.
“But, I…”
“No need to now Daniel dear, are you hungry?”
“A little,” her belly grumbled telling on her.
“When did you eat last?”
“This morning when I fed Da--the cat.”
“Who’s Da, the cat?”
“Yes, Damien.”
“Interesting, why Damien?”
“Oh--he’s a little devil. I believe we’re here,” Daniel returned as the taxi pulled to a stop in front of the Hotel doors.
Brian got out with the agility of a man of twenty and only got to the back of the car before Daniel jumped out like the seat was on fire, slammed the door shut, and hopped on the sidewalk.
She stood there with a tight lipped smile that didn’t reach her eyes and make them sparkle like he imagined they could. He longed to make her laugh. Wondered if it’d be musical. “Let’s go eat, see if maybe some food won’t relax you a little.” he took her elbow leading her inside.
Stiffly she allowed him to lead her to the restaurant where a hostess in immaculate black and white showed them to a table.
