The Poison Dream; Exerpt from Chapter 4

“How long do you think you’ll stay?” Carmen asked pushing the door open.
“’Til tomorrow night at least. It’ll give him ti--me,” I stuttered seeing James laying with casual ease on the bed.
“Looks like sooner than that. I’ll go use the pone in the lobby to see if I can find someone to stay with tomorrow night,” Carmen said turning to go.
“You don’t have to do that,” James said in a rush. “Your sister told me what happened.”
“But--” I started.
“Ya, I know what I said Jen.”
“Yes but.”
“No buts. We’ve got room for one more person; she does need a place to stay.”
“Yes, I just thought that with you and me fighting… I wasn’t going to ask.”
“Until?”
“Until things were worked out and we had time to settle down again,” I smiled a sheepish little grin.
“Carmen, will you go get a coke or something’? I need to talk to Jen.”
“No prob.”
“Jen,” he began after Carmen left, “I’m really sorry. It’s just that I don’t like the way your parents treat you.”
“I’m not going to see my parents James!”
“I know that! I’m not a total idiot. Now quit interrupting me! Let me say what I’ve got to say; it’s hard enough already. I know how hard it’ll be for you; it was selfish of me to think only of how I feel. I’m really very sorry.”
“Does that mean you’ll go?”
“Yes it does, and I’m going to make a promise to you,” he replied taking my hands in his.” Next time I’ll try not to think so much of myself and be supportive of you. It’s time I gave a little baby!”
“Does that mean,” I cried with excitement.
“Yes,” he smiled. “It was written for you; you should sing it.”
