back from New Orleans

I've off the site for three weeks and just got back from New Orleans doing some volunteer work. I was working at a place where personal computer access was limited, but I'm back home now. The trip was quite an experience-- there is still so much devastation and people still need help as they rebuild. While some neighborhoods are recovering slowly, others will never be the same. The people, while optimistic and proud of their city, are getting tired and frustrated with FEMA and their local government.

It was an odd experience to be out in neighborhoods where piles of debris stood and mold accumulated, but then to return the downtown and French Quarter where several businesses are open. Most restaurants have limited menus and staff, but the food was excellent. Heard some great music and met some wonderful people (even Fats Domino!)
I think most people don't realize the exent of damage until you see it. The destruction goes on for miles and miles, and even furhter into Mississippi. There is so much to tell, but all I can say is that it was one of the best experiences I've had, and one of the worst at the same time.
