Helga's Album of the Week V

It was inevitable that I would get to this album one day. How could I not write about an album that sold over 500,000 copies in the first week of its release?

If you haven't heard of Coldplay you've obviously been living on another planet. Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion make up this famous foursome, who have won millions of fans since the release of their first single, Yellow, way back in 2000, off their Parachutes album, which has sold five million copies to date. Their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head was another best seller, and Coldplay have won several Brit awards, and a Grammy or two.

No one is more surprised by their popularity than the band. Who knew such an austere and tactile musical existence would lead to such greatness? Yet it has.

It was their latest album X&Y which sold over half a million copies in the first week of sale, and it even made it to the short-listing for the coveted Mercury Music Prize sponsored this year by Nationwide. Unfortunately, it is well known that mainstream bands are never popular with the judges of the Prize, which was controversially won this year by Antony and the Johnsons, a New York-based band.

(A note to any American readers - the Mercury Music Prize is awarded to British and Irish musicians, and Antony Hegarty only qualified on the basis that he was born in Chichester, UK).

Coldplay's "celeb" fans include Gwyneth Paltrow (also known to the public as Mrs Chris Martin),Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Winona Ryder, Sylvester Stallone, Kirsten Dunst, Tobey Maguire, Keri Russell, Elijiah Wood, Daphne Zuniga, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Bob Saget, just to name a few...

Then there are the millions of us out there...

"Success is a journey, not a destination. May their journey be a long one, and may we be along for the ride..."

Love, hugs and kisses from ♥♥HH♥♥

I got to see them in concert several weeks ago in Vancouver, Wa here on west coast of the US. It was a great show but they didn't play "spies" which is my favourite Coldplay song.
