Helga's Album of the Week IV (Part 2)

The second album being reviewed this week is by newcomers The Magic Numbers.

Helga actually has to confess that while she had heard their single Love Me Like You, she’d never really paid much attention to the band as such. It was only upon recommendation from a good friend (thanks Nick ) that she went out and bought their debut album The Magic Numbers, and during the past two weeks, this CD has never left the CD player!!

The sound of the band revolves around the brilliant song-writing and guitar playing talents of singer Romeo Stodart. Born and raised in Trinidad, the family moved to New York when he was teenager and then moved, again, to the UK. There Romeo met drummer Sean Gannon, and they started making music. To complete the band line-up they added Romeo's equally talented sister Michele on bass and vocals, while Sean's sister Angela takes care of percussion, melodica and third vocals.

They draw their inspiration from many sources, including amongst others, singer songwriters Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, 60's harmony groups Mamas & Papas, Lovin Spoonful, epic rock or such mavericks as David Axelrod. The band has crafted a sound which like Flaming Lips or Beck, comes from everywhere but is uniquely theirs.

Forever Lost was the first single off this fabulous album, and it will be interesting to see how the band fares in the Mercury Prize sponsored this year by Nationwide.

***I am unsure how readily available these two albums are to listeners outside of the UK… here’s hoping these talented artists will soon be heard on radio stations across the world!!***
