Covers uncovered

Had to do some shopping for my husband's birthday, and being a musician, I knew he'd appreciate some good music. On his wish list was a CD by the Small Faces. I had great fun finding the music, and I'm enjoying my introduction to music that was around before I was even born.

As I listened to Itchycoo Park (did you know it was a Small Faces original?) it made me think about covers done by artists over the years.

A couple of months ago I heard an excellent cover by the Goo Goo Dolls, of Supertramp's "Just A Little Bit", and I was impressed. It made me go home and fish out my Supertramp CD, and play it again. I haven't listened to the rest of the Goo Goo Dolls CD, but I've read that it's worth a listen.

Over the years I've heard some excellent covers, and then again, some rather naff, piss-poor efforts... I want to ride over that bloody Crazy Frog everytime I hear that mindless tune on the radio... and all the mobile phones I hear playing that bloody tune as well!!

I'd love to hear what people in the AdultFriendFinder world think about the subject of covers, and what their favourite/most-hated covers have been...

See you in the Euro Hot Tub soon!

I usually prefer the original, except:

Blue suede shoes covered by Elvis Presley;
I will always love you, covered by Whitney Houston;
Hank Williams songs covered by Patsy Cline!

Originals are usually the best, but sometimes you have a great songwriter with mediocre performance skills who nevertheless tries to perform his/her own music--the whole cult of authenticity thing. In those cases the cover is often better. A good example for me was a disc of various artists covering material by Richard Thompson, who simply cannot sing very well. As I recall, REM did a great cover of one tune ("Wall of Death," maybe?). Redmustang's suggestion of Patsy Cline covering Hank Williams falls into this category, I think.

When you know the original, it's hard to listen to a cover version with fresh ears, especially when the cover is so unexceptional, so like the original. Need I name names? Any boy band of the last 10 years would be a good start.

But sometimes ...

I always thought Sinead O'Connors "Nothing Compares 2 U" was an awful, whiny song but the cover version by Kelly Jones (he of the Stereophonics) somehow tears into my soul.

**Wonders if anyone could do a interpretation of abdoullah5's comment*** ... my French is non-existent!!

Lol, Papy... I'm sure the Pink Floyd boys will be happy to hear you'd forgotten their name!

TQG... I have to agree with you on the pretty boys "we can barely sing" bands... music to me is what gets you rocking when it's playing on the radio, not some catchy-moves video on the telly. Having said that, Robbie Williams was ex-boy band, and he turned out okay... now that is an album worth listening to!! (Swing While You're Winning... I recommend it!)

Sometimes there are songs that I like no matter who does them. Big Yellow Taxi is one of them. Now that I have said that I can't remember who the second version was by, but it's a Joni Mitchell song. "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got til it's gone, they paved Paradise and put up a parking lot..." I have heard a cover by a male singer and I love it but don't know who it is.

I kinda like how Lennie Kravitz did American Woman.

Who killed Tommy James' I Think We're Alone Now? I want to strangle that girl.

Not all who wander are lost.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's unfinished cover of "Little Wing" is amazing. It is as raw and powerful as anything I have ever heard - even without a vocal track.

Van Halen's cover of Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" pretty much sucked: and I love Van Halen

Best cover - "Little help from my friends", Joe Cocker.
Worst cover - "Stairway to heaven", Rolf Harris.

Perhaps a bit unfair, as neither were really 'covers', as such.
Cocker changed the song radically, and made it his own.
Harris was just fooling around - as he does.

Flinkychick... the Counting Crows have done a version of Big Yellow Taxi, and you're right, it is a good song, more so because of the words.

Mmmmmm.... Lenny... don't get me started on him... one of music's sexiest men! I'm in my own world when I hear him singing "I belong to You"...

Hmmm ... now you've got me thinking (and it hurts).

I realise that, actually, there are loads of cover versions I like but my choices do come down to what I already said: if I'm not particularly familiar with the original, the cover version is much more likely to win me over.

Cover songs...great subject! I think the main criteria for choosing a song to cover is adding something new to the song or at least making you forget about the original...for a few minutes anyway. Here are a few of my favorite covers:
1) Little Wing covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan (good call Fallic40)
2) Comfortably Numb covered by the Scissor Sisters (took a while to grow on me)
3) Low sparked high heeled boys covered by Rickie Lee Jones
4) Gin and Juice covered by Hayseed Dixie (nothing like mixing bluegrass with gangsta )
5) Tuesdays Gone covered by Metallica
6) Where did you sleep last night covered by Nirvana
7) Crazy covered by Patsy Cline (is actually by Willie Nelson...most people don't realize this)
For what it's worth covered by Public Enemy
and oh my many more....Great topic, Helga!
