A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on it's face and the egg is frowning and looking a bit unsatisfied. The egg mutters, to no-one in particular, "Well, I guess we answered THAT question..."

And a very happy day to you too Helga!!

Hmm Well obviously the chicken as whatever laid the egg was a close cousin to the chicken but not the chicken, of course you subscribe to creationism it was the chicken again, more importantly why cant chickens fly?

Thank You for Your Time and Attention

In my case, the egg as I was able to eat scrambled eggs before I had the teeth to chew chicken meat.

If you want a serious answer: the egg. Sorry, Expat, but whatever laid the egg that contained the mutated genes that led to the first true chicken would only have been a close relative to the chicken.

If you want a non-serious answer, I can't possibly beat Cannon's answer

As a Darwinian I would of course say that the egg arrived as an evolutionary means of reproduction long before reptiles emerged from the oceans. Avians (and therefore chickens) of course evolved from reptiles.

As a Christian Creationist I would probably have to say the chicken but since God alone is omniscient I would suggest asking him to be certain.

As a solipsist I would of course say neither since I am the only thing that can be known with certainty and verified.

You can pretty much go on for a while with this.

I'm a lot of fun at parties honest! I've never been invited to a party but in theory it should prove true.

Always,
Luke

To be honest though, Cannon has the best answer

It depends if the egg reffered to is a chicken egg.
