A Capitol Fourth of July

I love fireworks. I always have since I was little kid. There are few places in the US where the fireworks are as spectacular as on the Mall in Washington, DC. The Statue of Liberty in New York harbor and at Independence Hall in Philadelphia are the only two places in the US which are comparable as to spectacular and in an historic setting.

When I was kid, my parents would take the family to Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia, and we would sit on the lawn in front of the Army Chief of Staff’s house to which the fireworks on the Mall. The view of the Mall from Fort Myer is breathtaking. Fort Myer is on Arlington Ridge next to the Arlington National Cemetery overlooking the City of Washington. From the Chief of Staff’s house you look all the way up the Mall to the Capitol dome. In the foreground is the Potomac River with the Lincoln Memorial on the banks and beyond that the Washington Monument. The river is filled with boats and the reflection of the monuments in the water is beautiful. There is nothing more awe inspiring than the fireworks around the Washington Monument. My parents would bring a portable radio on which we could hear the music being played on the Mall to accompany the fireworks which always ended with a stirring rendition of the Stars and Stripes Forever for the grand finale of the fireworks.

One of the sideshows for the fireworks was to watch the planes coming in for a landing at Reagan National Airport fly in front of the fireworks. At that point the planes are very low on the Potomac River and appear to be almost level with us. As kids it was a fun thing to see the fireworks explode around the planes. It looked like they were being hit by the fireworks.

Tomorrow on the Fourth of July, I will be watching the fireworks with friends on the roof garden of one of the high rise apartment buildings in Arlington. The view of the city and the Mall from the roof garden is hard to beat. We will be having a typical Fourth of July party, except we can’t barbecue because no fires are allowed on the roof garden. No one will know it, but when the fireworks start, I will be a little boy again watching the fireworks and just as awed as I was when I was watching the fireworks from Fort Myer as a little boy. I look forward to it.

I may not be on the website for a few days during the holidays, so to everyone in the US ‒ Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
