A quick follow up...

Yes, I do my writing in bars. Yes, my drinks are free. No, I am not a drunken barfly. In fact I rarely drink anything more intoxicating than iced tea. So no I do not hang out here and get drunk, because if I attempted to I would surely end up in the hospital.

"The hospital" you say, "over a few drinks?"

Yep, you see I have type 2 diabetes and strong drink and I are not on good terms. Believe it or not I do all my writing sober and unaltered. Were I to indulge in alcoholic beverages it would send my BGL (blood glucose level) through the roof, and the last thing you want is a psychotic writer (or maybe you do, but I am not willing to experiment with this). I am crazy enough as it is, liquor would just make it worse.

Now interestingly, I recently heard a professor encouraged "relaxing enhancers" (take that as exactly what you think it means) to her creative writing students. Really, there is a long tradition of writers getting creative stimulus from perception altering substances. But in my case I prefer to do it all sober. I feel if you can't do it sober then you really aught to consider why you are doing it at all.

There are many things I will experiment with, but getting psychotic is not one of them. I have been there and done that, I do not care for a repeat performance.

Those who need drinks to loosen up or have a good time are the ones bad off. Choosing an environment one feels comfortable in has nothing to do with alcohol, just with your state of mind.

maybe I should try getting drunk once. On the other hand, I'm an idiot without any help as it is...
