CBS's Cute Katie

Well, if you were like me last night, you stripped down to nothing to prepare to watch Katie Couric do her first night of news. There was such build up about her assuming the anchor role, I figured there would be something sexy to get off to. I grew up with Katie. She was the local human interest’s reporter here in Washington when I was in school. You know the one they send to the Cat fashion shows or to interview the world’s oldest Monopoly player.

No such luck, it was just a normal newscast. I have to say it was a bit different than the normal news approach. I didn’t think much of her outfit (in my best gay voice, “she was wearing white after labor day”, how tacky). I know we are not suppose to judge her on such trivial and sexist matters, so I won’t. I found her stories to be interesting and I like her “free speech” segment where she will allows someone to sound off about something. Last night, it was the guy who made the Super Size Me movie. He was sounding off about how most of America is in the middle on most issues. I agreed with what he had to say. She also did a mini-tribute to Steve Irwin. I know most people thought he was a crazy idiot, but at the end of the day you have to respect him for doing a job he wanted to do. Few people can say they are doing what they truly want to do and I think you can say he was one of the lucky few.

We were also treated to an advance look at the Vanity Fair picture of the lost baby (TomKat’s offspring). Maybe I have not seen many babies, but this kid’s hair is really dark, almost two dark? Could this child be some sort of bringer of doom? The picture almost looked down right church like. Could this child be an alien or genetically bread super human that will wipe humanity off the face of the earth? I know most people are saying “how cute” I’m saying we need to keep an eye on this kid.

Katie’s final story was very touching. There is a guy who goes to third world orphanages and takes the children’s pictures and comes back to the US and has high school art classes do portraits and then takes them back to the children. It was a sweet story and makes you think if these artists are doing the paintings; a little compassion might grow in their hearts.

Well, needless to say, I could not get off to Katie’s newscast, but she did a good newscast. Will I give up watching Simpson’s reruns to watch her? Maybe every once in awhile.

She challenged the audience at the end to come up with a cleaver sign off. I think most of the good ones have been taken or done. Maybe she could leave with, Good night and remember, I’ve had many things put up my butt……..

I thought it was both insane and inane enough to consider what she wore on her first newscast a news item in itself. (It played as a teaser on at least one of the major web portals.)

But now, an otherwise intelligent blogger finds it sufficiently noteworthy to waste 511 precious words discussing it? Dude, you could have written about SEX with those!

Seriously, different strokes for different folks. Enjoy your newscast. Or the Simpsons.
