You Are So Beautiful-Obsession

You are so beautiful to me
You are so beautiful to me
Can't you see
You're everything I've hoped for
You're everything I need
You are so beautiful to me

For those who don't know these are the words to the Joe Cocker hit "You Are So Beautiful". Lately I've been totally obsessed with this song. A few weeks back I bought the CD of Billy Preston-Ulimate Collection. On it is his version of the song. Billy Preston actually wrote the song and was the first to record it. His version actually has a second verse (rather then repeating the first a second time like the Cocker version). The second verse is:

Such joy and happiness you bring
Such joy and happiness you bring
Like a dream
You're like a guiding light
Shining in the night
You heaven's gift to me
You are so beautiful to me

Billy Preston was a rock organist so his version is more spiritual sounding then the Cocker version with piano. (Billy Preston did the organ work on the Beatles "Get Back") I prefer the Billy Preston version.

I wanted to compare the 2 versions so I decided to download the Cocker version from the internet. In doing so I have become totally obsessed with the song. I've been spending several hours each day searching for different version of the song. I've download about 40 different versions of the song. There was the typical ballad style by artists like Eric Clapton, Kenny Rogers, Al Green, Boys II Men, and others. Several jazz versions like Kenny Rankin and Milt Jackson. Several jazz instrumental versions mostly saxophones but also Urbie Green on trombone. There was Floyd Cramer's version, with pop piano only. There was even a dance remix version, a Korean version (with English words still), a barbershop quarter version, a snipit from the American Idol auditions (George Huff), and even Pavoratti. There were some versions that I tried download and still haven't got them like Bob James, Tanya Tucker, and a saxophone quintet version. These I just haven't been able to get downloaded yet.

It made me think about the song, and what it means. It obviously is such a universal song. Everyone has sometime in their life had someone who they thought was beautiful. Such a personal song. How we all want everyone to know how much we love another, and how great we think they are.

My obsession has gone beyond just downloading and listening to the song. I've also downloaded the chords so I play it on guitar. I also downloaded the piano music. I'm thinking of buying a cheap keyboard just to learn this song. I've done some piano playing in the past, just not much. Enough though that I can probably practice the piece to play it proficiently.

My ultimate goal is when I find a gal that I think is real beautiful to me, I'd like to present her with a CD or 2 that has the downloaded versions of the song, sing the song for her at karaoke, play it for her on keyboard, or guitar, etc. I have a gal in mind that I work with that keeps telling me that she is going to break up with her boyfriend, and that I'm 90% sure we'll hook up if she does break up with her boyfriend. So I haven't told any people yet about this obsession of the song just in case she becomes the one I surprise with the song.

What are you thoughts of the song. Has anyone ever sang the song for you or have you ever sang it to someone?
