you don't have to be neurotic to be an artist...but it helps. i find that i write more when i am more stressed and/or when i am not involved with a woman. that should not be earth-shaking news, i guess. it may have been pat conroy who said the best thing his dad (don conroy, the model for "the great santini" )ever gave him was a bad childhood. frank mccort would agree. that may sink any hopes i ever had of dabbling in letters. my dad was and is a sweetheart of a guy. in fact my life kind of paralleled Conroy's at points. my dad was a marine fighter pilot. mom a patrician lady. we lived at garden spots like cherry point and havelock. southern places near military bases. all boys' jr and sr high schools. uniforms and drill teams instead of much phys ed. no girls in class which i think makes women forever targets of opportunity. i think the all same sex may stunt some social grace that just never quite catches up. don't know. when i got to a small college and there right in front of me in saturday old testament class was deb brown's butt. live. and me with a hangover from trying to drink upcountry south carolina dry and damn near succeeding. so when some girl would say "can't we just be friends?" regardless of what i said in response, in fact the answer was probably not. it was not in me. i did not know how to just be friends; to unsex them. i'm better now, but jesus, if i can't do it now, it ain't likely to happen.
