cutting grass

wonder why i like cutting grass, evening up the green blades as well as the odd dandelion and chickweed. there is something satisfying about doing a thing when i can see results and it just stays done. i think it is from ealing with people all day. they never stay in the same place. things get twisted. they keep coming back. you want to say, excuse me, but what part of N-O do you not understand? chainsawing is even better. it makes even more noise and it does major stuff and really stays done. chainsaw story. true story. spent time on a farm down in chatham county. lots of guineas on the place. one was nesting. they have zillions of little downy chicks and lose almost all of them. we are cutting and splitting wood. chips flying all over. lots of noise. she is close enough to actually get wood chips on her back but she does not move. then a single silent hawk cruises overhead. shadow slides along the ground. she freaks out and leaves the nest to hide under a bush. the hawk would not have got into our midst but momma guinea does not know that. she does not recognize that trucks and chainsaws and rolling logs pose a greater danger to her and progeny than does the one hawk. but she has that old primal fear thing going and has a programmed response that is not really useful in the situation. made me wonder what things i fear that are innocuous and what things i do not that are harmful.
