Who's afraid to fly???

I am nervous about my flight. This is my first time in a plane and yes, I am actually a bit afraid. I suppose it is because it is overwhelming.
Flying? Big deal, I've done worse...
I don't even think about it after I sit down
I'm nervous when I get on, but after I'm in the air..I'm fine
I'm scared until I land...
I must be knocked out, drugged, or drunk to fly.

One tip I got from my sister...chew some gum on the flight...it will help pop your ears from the buildup of pressure!

Take a book if you don't get 'car sick' to read, it helps calm you down too.

It's not as bad as you think it will be. I actually hate take off, cuz the pressure, but once I'm up in the air, I'm fine. I've flown 2 times (both from Nebraska to Florida to my sister's place ) so I can't say I'm a pro, but I do know I can handle it. Turbulance sucks though! Landing is fun too, but I also tend to get slightly dizzy from the pressure changes once again...but that is me because I was secondarily struck by lighting when I was 10, so I'm extremely sensitve to pressure changes.

Breathe deeply and don't concentrate on the flight...always make sure you have something to do!

Have fun and looking forward to hearing about how your trip went!

I'm leaving the site end of March. To those who want to keep in touch, see blog for details.

It's the actually getting on the right plane at the right time that makes me nervous.

The big planes are no big deal for me. It's the 40 seaters or smaller that make me feel a bit queasy and nervous...
It's normal to feel this way your first few times. You'll be fine. Listen to [member popmuse1} when it comes to the gum.

i hate the take off the most. but you might love the whole experience. to deal with take off, i put myself into a medidative state of mind as soon as i get onto the plane, and then as the plane starts rolling forward, i consciously let myself drift into sleep, so then i miss the take off! i have travelled a lot on planes, so have now got this down to a fine art. once you are in the air, its usually fine, and landing is ok to, cos you are usually excited to be at your destination so you don't worry so much.

try enjoy it hey!

Read up on HOW planes work. It might help make you a little less nervous if you understand the fundementals and what's going on around you.

Also, large commercial airliners are SO safe. Your actually in much more danger just driving to / from the airport than you are on the plane. I know that typically doesn't help but hey.... it's worth a shot.

Of course the only other acceptable method of dealing with the fear is to drink heavily -tm

Planes are much safer than other forms of transportation. The take off can be exciting; pulling all those Gs. Like speeding down the road in a really fast sports car.
I do agree the little puddle jumpers, as they are called, can be a little unnerving. They tend to bounce around a little more; the ride isn't as smooth.
Think about the exciting time you are going to have when you reach you "final desination". No, not like in the movie title but like they say at the end of the flight. Listen for it, it's quite comical what they say. Oh, and just in case you don't know how to use a seat belt, they will give you nice instructions. lol
Have fun,

I have to agree with Jude, flying is safer. The hardest part for most people is the take off. My advice is take a nap. Even if you have to take a Tylenol PM to do it. IF all else fails, have a small cocktail. They serve you a limit of 2 alcholic beverages for a reason!

Be careful, be safe, have fun, we'll expect plenty of details followed by pictures, and I'm jelous!!!!

flying would be better, if the whiskey bottles were a lot bigger, I feel like a freakin giant with that little bottle in my hand.

and it is a lot of fun to mess with the people that are shaking
and getting all white nuckeled.

so what do you expect out of a drunk redneck

I usually end up critiquing the pilot's lol.

Nah I have no problem flying. Flying is actually statistically safer than driving a car on the highway. I get a little nervous during especially bad turbulence, just because I've seen one too many movies , but otherwise I'm usually asleep or reading.

Have a nice flight!

I 've crossed the Atlantic 26 times...
I am lucky not to be afraid...
However my father was just terrified. I had to call him every time as soon as I landed, otherwise he 'd get no sleep...

Mandy sweetie: You have my professional word you're in good hands. 28 yrs of aircraft maintenance says so. I fly so often, I tend to fall asleep on the taxi out to take off.. Always flips people out. As for those above who comment on lack of legroom: Exit row seats or bulkhead rows.. LOTS more room.. As for the ones who are afraid of flying, Quickest way to get over it, take flying lessons. and YES I am serious.

Hugs.. and you'll be fine.. seeya when you get back

I all but have to be forced on the plane, kicking and screaming. Then, once we're in the air, I'm fine. But beware... Don't wear any light colored clothing on the plane. The instant they serve coffee, that's when the plane hits turbulance. I learned that the hard way.

there wasn't a none of the above...i would have preferred to vote for 'must have sex in on board bathroom in order to fly' option. a hug from you would do.

i hate flying. i had a chiropractor sit next to me on a flight one time. i used to work with his son, so there was a connection. when i'm nervous i turn into a chatter box and this was the early morning flight, so i know i drove him nuts. i apologized for being so rowdy and explained my issues. he decided to try to explain quantum physics. man, that took for freaking ever.
