Fairy Story continued...

The sky was just graying with the light of morning as I went for water for the stallion. I had found some grain and corn at the cottage bringing it it for him so his strength would be up if need be on this day. As I stood grooming the stallion I was observing the movements of the others who were begining to stir in the early hours of the day. The traders were packing up and making ready for the road, securing loads, watering and feeding animals, harnessing, hitching, all the busy work that goes with the trades and wares of the tinker. As I worked on the stallion more and more people began to stir, villagers who had houses within the walls were lighting fires, fetching water, making ready for the day. Guards were moving about making themselves seen to the wanders and tinkers.
As I watched a woman came from the direction of the Castle, she was dressed in plain clothes but obviously no a commoner, as she approached a guard he bowed slightly as she bade him good morn. She moved across the courtyard and I realized she was the one I had seen outside the castle the night before.
She was walking back up to the Castle when I made to approach her, bowing low I spoke,"Lady, forgive my boldness, but I have need to set an audience with the Lord or Lady of the House, I am Sean of the Clan McClure, late of the house of Stewart royal guard. I know yea to be of this house Milady and would ask you to convey a message to your Lord. I need but a short audience Milady." She stood looking at me, with a look on her face as if she was unsure if she should scream for a guard or laugh, something of a smile crossed her lips. "What post did you hold with Her Majesty?" Near dumb that she did not scream, "My apologies Milady, my post? That of the Capitan of the royal guard,Milady. Once again she smiled at me, this time with genuine humor, "Your request will be given to the Lady of the House, Sir Knight, may hap an audience can be arranged yet this day." "Your Ladyship is to kind and it is my thanks you have for not having me thrown out the gate." "Sir Sean, is it then? I will have the capitan of the house guard come to you and find you some more fitting quarters." With this she noticed the stallion, " Your steed sir?" "Yes Milady." " I think we can find room for such a fine animal in the stables, sir." " My thanks Milady."
All in all I had not raised the house to arms, would have my audience and met a beautiful healer, this was going to be a better day than I had expected. Shortly a stout fellow came to me and introduced himself as the capitan of the guard, greeted me warmly and bade me follow him to my new quarters. Having lived rough for the last few months a cell with a bed would have seemed a castle to me. He lead me to a chamber room, dumbfounded I asked if he had made some mistake, "Oh no Sean, her ladyship was very specific, you are to be treated as a guest of note to the house." This was not something I had thought would be the case. I inquired the Capitan's name, "Seamus Mc Cloud of the clan Mc Cloud, McClure, most of the guard here are highlanders like yourself and know of your plight. Word came over a month ago that you may come here seeking asylum. We have been awaiting you cousin.
Twas true the Mc Clouds and the McClure's were in fact cousins and looking at him I knew I could at last relax for a time. "You are the son of old Bear Mc Cloud, are ye not? Seamus, what are so many of the highlanders doing here, from the look you must have a cadre here?" "Yea and some not seen who work the fields and orchards." "Seamus I need to clean the dust of the road from me if the lass is going to get that audience. Is there some where I can clean my frock and m'self?" "Sean, settle yer self boy, the "Lass" you were talking to is the daughter of the Lord of the house, and she said for you to take your time and rest this day, then come to dinner this night with the house and staff. This is not like any other place you may have been lad, the Lord is away and she is doing her best to run the house in his stead, and I'm thinkin' she is doin' a fine job of it. I will have some of the washer women clean your clothes and show you to the baths." "Baths?! They have baths here? I have not seen the like since England. Are they like the Roman baths?" " Built just like them and heated in the same way, you enjoy a day of rest cousin and I will be here to escort you to dinner this night."
After I had cleaned up and got back to the chamber the stress of the last months travel over came me and I slept. A light tapping at the door woke me to Seamus with clothes for me to wear. What he had in his hands I could not believe, a full dress uniform of the house of Stewart, since I had left the service of the Queen I had not seen one of these and thanked him for his thought so I would look the gentleman at table with royalty.
Dinner was not what I had expected, the manor family sat at a head table and the house staff before them. As we ate the staff gave reports of what was being done each day, what supplies were on hand, what was coming to harvest and what they would need to trade for. I was introduced by Seamus and the staff and family welcomed me and bade me good tidings. When the meal was done Her Highness came to me, in my best courtly manner did I bow to her, to this she giggled and bade me rise," Sir you have the protection of this house for as long as you wish it." " Milady is kind, I do wish to thank you and beg your forgiveness for my boldness this morn." "Fear not Sir it was the first time in weeks I have had cause to laugh, I would however like to offer you a position with this house if you would consider it." "I will think on it Milady, if that can be an answer for now?" "It can, for now good sir, good night to you, Sean." "Good night Milady." "It is Laurestina, good sir, and I wish you to use it.""Yes milady Laurestina, as you wish." As she exited the room she looked back at me and giggled turned and left the room. Seamus came to me and bade me let him walk me back to my chamber. Once there he produced a fine bottle of whiskey which we drank and talked of family and home. He told me some of the history of the family of this house, that they had ties to the french aristocracy and were in some way connected to the Scottish crown. The whiskey and weariness put me soon in the need to sleep, Seamus left saying we would break fast on the morrow with the staff in the kitchen. Tomorrow would come soon enough, it was bed for me, still not believing my good fortune on this day as I drifted off to sleep.
