Supreme Court vacancy

Now that Justice Sandra Day-O'Connor has retired from the Supreme Court, we could all be seeing a dramatic shift on how the Court votes. President Bush has an opportunity to appoint a centrist to the Court and avoid a long drawn out battle with the Senate. In my opinion, it is unlikely he will do that. As we speak, he is receiving alot of pressure from the religious right to appoint a Justice that will be willing to re-hear Roe v Wade and vote to overturn the 7-2 decision(which by the way was written by Harry Blackmun, a registered Republican appointed by a Republican President) Appointing an anti-choice Justice will give Bush 4 firm votes to overturn Roe (Scalia, Thomas, Rehnquist and whomever is appointed). Most likely there will be at least 2 more vacancies soon as Justice Rehnquist is ill with cancer and Justice Stevens is 85 years old. Once either one of those vacancies takes place Bush will have his 5 votes and women in the good ol' USA will take a step back 35 years.

Back in the 1990's I used to do clinic escort at some of the local women's health facilities here in Sacramento. Due to other committments I no longer do clinic escort, but I donate money to Planned Parenthood here in Sacramento. I have seen first hand how these kooks operate. They are a bunch of lunatics who will do darn near anything to get their way. The right to lifers will certainly increase their activity in the near future in order to have their agenda become the law of the land. To be perefectly honest, I am much more scared of these folks than I am walking down K st mall at midnight.

Pro-choice does not mean you are for abortion. It means that you believe each person should make up their own mind however they see fit to do it. This issue is not a Democrat or Republican issue. It is an issue of civil liberty which should be above partisan politics. If you believe in the right to choose, Gemini rrw urgess you to stand up and be counted now before it is too late.
