FAITH TO LET GO

"In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry." - Jonah 2:2

FAITH TO LET GO

The story of Jonah is a familiar one, but there is a lot here if we give it our attention. Look at Jonah chapter 2; this is where Jonah finds himself in the belly of the fish, crying out to God. It is interesting, because chapter 2 describes Jonah's ordeal before he was swallowed by the fish. He was sinking down, down, tangled up, drowning, on the verge of death. Now, God could have caused the fish's mouth to be waiting right as Jonah was thrown overboard. Instead, it seems as if God waited until the last possible moment to step in and save Jonah. In Hebrews 12, we learn that out of love, God disciplines His children to bring us closer to Him- and that is exactly what is happening to Jonah here. God let Jonah get to the very end of his rope, forcing Jonah to trust God. And that is what God wants to do with us. Have you slid to the very end of your rope? That is exactly where God wants you to be. Now there is only one thing left to do; you are the end of your rope- now trust God and let go. It is only when we stop clinging to what we want to do that we can fall into the arms of our Heavenly Father. It is only when we let go of our rope, abandoning ourselves to the freefall of faith, that God can do what He has been wanting to do all along: teach us to fly.
“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” ‒ Isaiah 40:30-31

Dear God, Give me faith to let go to this life I am clinging to that has brought me trouble and separation from You. I want to let go and fall into Your love- I want to experience knowing that I am dependent on You and only You. But I need faith, Lord. Grant me the faith to let go. In Christ Jesus’ holy name I pray, amen.
