CALL ON THE LORD OUT OF A PURE HEART

“Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” - 2 Timothy 2:22

CALL ON THE LORD OUT OF A PURE HEART

It's a much-talked-about discussion, with numerous books, sermons, and seminars calling us to lead pure lives. But among all the hype, have we completely missed the true meaning of purity? What is purity? What is it not?
I propose a revolutionary concept, one that was embraced by the biblical authors but that has been all but forgotten in our age of sexual openness. Purity is not simply the lack of sexual immorality or other evil; purity is the conscious, active pursuit of righteousness. Purity is not just "don't do that"; purity, rather, tells us to "do this." Look at today’s verse: this verse is the definition of purity. Flee evil desires; don't press the boundaries as far as you can and call that "purity." Rather- pursue righteousness. Setting boundaries of sin without setting goals of holiness traps us in a system of legalism that has no hope of delivering us from immorality. Only fixing our eyes on Jesus and His joy, casting aside the sin that entangles us, will enable us to rise above our sin-soaked culture and lives of compromise to be the men and women that God is calling us to be.

Holy Spirit, Guide me in Your paths of righteousness, for the glory of Your name. I want to be pure, Lord. Create in me a pure heart; give me not just the desire to shun evil, but give me a passion for Your holiness. In Jesus Christ’s holy name I pray, amen.
