WTF!!! And Other Pointless Charitable Causes

Today I learned from various sources that the (in)famous “Baby Jessica” will has just gotten married. Nevermind that this makes me feel older than dirt…especially since someone almost 10 years younger than me is old enough to take their vows. Nevermind that the groom is 13 years older than the bride (you just know this one is gonna last). I was simply reading along, mentally nodding my head in an “oh that’s nice” manner…until I read the part about her getting trust fund that may be valued over 1-fucking‒MILLION dollars when she turns 25. This is a fund created solely from “well wishers” who gave money when her aunt was stupid enough to let a toddler waddle around her backyard that had an open well in it.

This not only blew me away...it pissed me off. And you just know it’s the very same people who will literally spit in a homeless person’s face for having the audacity to ask for a quarter for food.

Why do people give money to pointless causes? I understand reading about a death in the paper and giving money for a funeral. Or hearing about and accident and giving money to help pay hospital bills (due to the sorry state of health care coverage in this country).

But a baby falling down a well??? Or how about the bozos who gave to E_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Smart who, I’m sorry but, was too mentally slack-jawed to try and escape even while in public (and please don’t start in on the “she was brainwashed” crapopalooza). Better yet, the SaveKaryn suckers who actually GAVE money to help a silly twit that managed to get herself into over $20,000 of debt. Hmmmmm…that gives me an idea!

LoL. When I hear stories like that on the news I simply file it under the "why the fuck is this news?" category and change the channel.

I guess I can't count on your donation. You see when I was younger I got my foreskin caught in my zipper. It's a burden I've lived with low these many years. With the gracious help of others I've been able to lead a life of luxury and haven't had to get a real job. Recently though I've seen the error of my ways and I'm hoping to fulfill my life long dream of becoming an oil boy for Vivid films.

I can see it now. The flyers will be everywhere.

SAVEFROGGER PLEASE DONATE WHAT YOU CAN AND WHEN YOU CAN. 501(c) is for non profit...is it 501(P) for Profit?

I on the other hand donate mainly to causes assisting or protecting animals in Houston. Have not given up entirely on the human race but I am betting on the animals.

Do appreciate your insight Frogger.

How about Donald Trump getting a second chance at wealth when he blew everyone else's money. I don't know about you but if someone fucks up my investment, I generally avoid giving them money in the future. This doesn't seem to hold true for the 'wealth gurus'.

You hit the nail on the head. I'm glad someone else gets annoyed when people finaly decide to give something to charity, only to waste it on stupid causes.

I have to agree with you on this. I didn't even know that there had been a fund set up for 'Baby Jessica'. And the Smart kid came from some money, so I don't understand that at all.

I guess it goes back to 'fooling some of the people some of the time'. Come up with a good sob story, let the media get wind of it and run it on the evening news...and it takes on a life of its own.

Good point about not helping the homeless...I guess they aren't as pretty or as cute as those listed above.

A friend of mine told me a story about a cousin of his who placed an ad in a local paper that read: "Only one more day to send in your dollar!" and it included an address. That's it. No mention of what the dollar would be spent on or anything.

He recieved over $400 before the authorities clamped down on his operation.

Many people suffer from a lack of thinking.

i would have to agree with you there...some people do tend to give money to strange causes...yet there are people who are starving every minute of everyday in the third world...and you know what someone had the audacity to say to me about that...we should pay for birth control for them rather than food then they can stop having so many f***ing babies...boy did he get an earful...

end of rant...

great post

Why does what people do woth their money phase you?

This is our cultue. This what we do.

I love that when a woman was killed by a Mountain lion a few years ago in Calf, people gave more money to the zoo that was taking care of the baby cubs that were left without the Mountain lion-MOM(they shot it) then gave to the fund set up for the slaughtered woman's kids, so they would get thru school and have support.I thought that was funny, but it doesn't make me angry. People work hard. If they want to burn their money, so be it.

Wecome to America. We give away more money to oversees aid than any other country. This is what we do.

How can it be bad? What do I care what people donate to?
I'm sure people donate to "White Power-neo nazi" causes.
Are you not upset about that?

LET'S GO METS!!!

Preach on! Why not help those who really need it, the local kids who need a new baseball field. The homeless dude, or maybe someone who needs gas. Oh well not everyone can give for the hell of it. Whether it be the salvation army or the dude who wants to clean your windshield. I don't nessecarily think it matters the amount you give but how many people you end up helping.

The BabyJessica fund was started for the expenses of her care while in the hospital and when her recovery was done there was leftover money....a substantsial amount mind you....but nonetheless, it generated interest over the past 10 years and will until she turns 25. Hence, the gruesome amount she will get, that money is also the product of interviews, book deals etc....etc.......she deserves it and I do not think giving to such a cause is all that bad. It is giving to things such as...a fire destroys a home after it goes up in flames due to the meth lab blowing up inside...NOW that is stupid

Anyone remember a website call savetoby ? Basically this guy said he found a bunny rabbit under his porch. And unless he got so much money, toby was going to die! He was going to eat him. He had actually received quite a sum in donations. I want to say it was over 20k at the time a few years ago.

Now he's selling books, and needs to sell 100,000 books by Nov. 2006.

Don't get me started on people and worthless causes I'll be there all day. I was feeling old because I remember how young I was when she fell down that well and that seems so long ago now, then I realised that you are the same age as myself. I will just have to take comfort from the fact that we must both have felt the same.

I couldn't agree more Frogger. It seems that idiocy and incompetence are always rewared these days. Someone does something stupid, so everyone digs into thier pockets. I am all for helping any charitable cause that is worthy, and will help someone get back on their feet. But all the lawsuits, and pedling for sympathy drives me nuts.

Whew, that feels better, lol

*shrugs* People tend to want to help, but sometimes their good intentions are misguided or misdirected. Instead of giving directly to Baby Jessica and her family, they should have contributed to organizations that helped the family in that moment of crisis so not only would they have benefited, but others would have as well.

That said, if anyone ever feels the need to want to give me money, I can damn sure use it until I hit big with the Tennessee or Missouri lotto or on a trip down to Tunica sometime.

Where there's a will, I want to be in it!

Well I've never been so insulted - well, at least not this week, if it was last week well --- but anyway, I've been called a hopeless case lots of times and no one's ever given me a dime.
