The Past

The Old Spice commercial states that scent is the strongest scense tied to memory. I beg to differ. There is nothing that reminds me of something more than music. My mom once told me that every time she hears that song Gonna Be A Lovely Day she thinks of me as a baby. I have my own set of memory sparks. This weekend I was driving to the store playing Feel Good Inc. by the Gorillaz and it hit me that this would be one of the songs that will always remind me of my first few years in Houston.

Kindergarten:
The World is a Rainbow

Grades 1-8:
It’s a bit of a blur but anything by The Boys or New Edition will do the trick.

High School:
Wild World~ blame my dad (Kat Stevens)
Loser (Beck)
Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang,(Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg)
Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)

College: (I really only listened to music my Freshman Year I’m not sure what I was doing the rest of the time)
Electric Relaxation (Tribe Called Quest)
Strong Enough (Sheryl Crow)
As I Lay Me Down (Sophie B. Hawkins)

Law School: (Keep in mind I lived in South Central)
Amore Divino (Café Tacuba)
Mayonesa (Chocolate)
Tren Al Sur (Los Prisioneros)
En El Muelle De San Blas (Maná)
537 Cuba (Orishas)

Library Science School:
Cry me A River (Justin Timberlake)
Crazy in Love (Beyoncé)~ this is just because it was played to death, normally I HATE Beyoncé
Clocks (Cold Play)
Fortress Around Your Heart (Sting)
Breathless (the Corrs)

Side Note: Speaking of the past, I came across the web page of someone I met before joining this site (would you believe it was on E-H*mony!). It didn’t work out mostly because I was not in the least bit attracted to him (I tried I really did!). Anyway I found out he is moving in with the girl he met after me. Congrats to him! He deserves it...but what does it say that all my exes are settling down lately?

Things to Be Happy About:

Bad Things Leading To Good Things
Light Bulbs in Different Colors
Packages On Your Doorsteps
PO Boxes
Fruity Scents

Goldmember_24kt: Or maybe we settle with people who settle down (Definitely NOT me!)

Just yesterday I was leaving client's office downtown Houston and the guy I've been working with al week said the damp wet smell reminded him of fishing. I dont know why, it didn't smell fishy or even foul for that matter. To me it reminded me of surfing all those years ago back in California, and the smell from my wetsuit.

I can think of any music that would remind me of a paticular time or place.

I have to disagree,
smell can bring up memmories long forgotten,

the smell of arrousal

then sound or music,

moans of pleasure

and finally taste

me between your legs, pleasing you orally until you faint from multiple orgasms

now that you have that to think about

Music is the fastest way to invoke emotion. One of those internet date sites asked what song I could think of for each situation and strangely enough it was quite easy to think of one for any situation.
After all these years I still find that Depeche Mode's "Love, Faith and Devotion" is the best CD to make love to. Or Enigma if your really into deep love making.
Congrats on your job!! You deserve it.
I must say I love your blogs. You have a great sense of humor. I try to write for my blog, but I think I have more fun in reading every one else's. Especially yours!
Hope to read more.

"All of my ex's live in Texas." I don't like the word settle. To me it implies becoming stagnant. What happens to things that become stagnant? I'd love to have a family. But if I do, I hope it's not because I settled. The older I get the possibility becomes reality. However, there is always mail order brides.

hey frogger:

I usually agree with most(if not everything)of what you say, However, how can ANYONE hate Beyonce? She's gorgoeus, talented, sweet, a great fashionista and seems to be pretty down to earth..Being that your from Houston though, you might know something that i don't. So I pose a question, Have you met her personally? or are her family members walking around crazy becuz they have a famous cousin, niece, sister etc.? or is it hidden jealousy?

still luv ya

The thing I regret is not being able to aptly remember every song from the soundtrack of my past.

I remember a few songs that were distinct, but not all of them.

Just the important poignant ones.

It all seems like a blur at times, intermixed with periods that were drawn out. Percepetion is a muthafucka...

Hi, Frogger, Follow Houstonian here. I like your blog, this is my first visit here, very well done! This will be one of the few blogs I watch from now on. I agree, music to me triggers more memories then anything else. It takes me places, almost like time travel in a way. I know that sounds strange, but its the only way I can describe it. When I hear a certian song, everything comes back.

Yep, I totally agree with you. For people who can or have had hearing music or sounds are closely tied with memory.
That said I also have very strong smell memory. The first school that I attended was a quaint little church school. The air was heavy with the smell of floor wax, boiled swede and cabbage from the kitchens and the smell of creepers & thorny shrubs in the church graveyard next door. I only have to catch a whiff of lavender floor wax and I'm right back there....shudder. With that vague feeling that you sometimes get when visiting a graveyard....that you are being watched.

For me the musical part of my memory is something that helps me to remember everything else. the act of remembering a tune is like a trip to the gym for old brain cells. For this reason music therapy is often used to help people with brain damage to link old memory and re-learn skills.

Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life.

Scent and music don't take me back to any specific moments or memories, but music does relax and inspire me.
I have all sorts of songs I like, but I listen to a little of everything from classical to country to R&B to rock to pop to hip hop to the occasional gospel song.

Kindergarten:
That song that goes In-EggShell-Sis-Day-O

Grades 1-8:
Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, John Lennon - courtesy of mother's lp collection.
Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul - strangely enough when I ordered a cd of each of theirs through my very first bmg membership, they never arrived. Dodged a bullet there.

High School:
Weather Experience (Prodigy)
Music Non Stop (Kraftwerk)
Bike (Pink Floyd)
One (U2)

College:
My Best Friend's Girl (Cars)
I Got You (Wilco)
Baby Got Going (Liz Phair)
Zoom Up (Kahimi Karie)
Grace, Too (Tragically Hip)
The Beatles
Bob Dylan

In Love In Chicago and Beyond:
Fell In Love With A Girl (White Stripes)
King Of Nails (Sparklehorse)
Knives Out (Radiohead)
Beautiful Day (U2)
This Mess Were In (PJ Harvey)
That second Coldplay cd (A Rush of Blood to the Head)

Now:
I make a reasonably regular (I'm almost finished with the second one) mix cd of music I'm hearing and send it to AdultFriendFinder readers. I don't know why I do this. Yet. Anyone who is interested, details are here at [post 165309]. Results of the first one can be read here at chili cheese dreams.

Frogger how can I come out of my cave and not visit your blog. You are the prettiest penguin on the block, and thanx for peeking at my profile too. xx

Kindergarten; First clash with the music world of repitition, some silly rule about having to sing the same lyrics as everyone else.

Grades one To eight. Allowed to participate in school Play night and got to be the front half of the Donkey during the singing of the First Noel in a manger. Some stupid rule about tap dancing Donkeys stopped future particpation in these night for Tala.

High School; free choice of Music preference was allowed, Ramones, Sex Pistols, AC/DC (the band perverts LMA, The Angels, Skyhooks.

College; Not that Tala is not edjumacated just that it was all noise at that time and I was more interested in Visual and physical stimulation than aural. If a girl liked a song or band I would listen or dance to it with her, my hypocrisy has no boundaries Nothing has changed since as I am as musical as a brick and any attempt at music gets me in trouble. So I stick with going along with everyone else in my subterfuge. And whenever I can put on the headphones and play Greenday.

Gave a book to an ex-girlfriend for her birthday in January which besides words had pictures in it... of water molecules. The author would play sounds and music to a glass of water then freeze it and take pics of the frozen water molecules and how they appeared different depending on the sound played. Because of the % of water in the human body it was about the relevance to the sound of the environment and how it may affect us. Bloody excellent read in fact and it did have great pics.

I couldn't agree with you more. One song that always pops into my head to remind me of my first failure at wooing a female is "never lie", by immature. That song has burned the summer of 94' into my memory for ever. Its because of that song that I can still see all of my friends who happened to be across the street when I came outside laughing like hyenas. Damn you Batman, damn you!

Gave a girl a ride in my wagon
She crawled in and took control
She was tired 'cause her mind was a-draggin'
I said, get some sleep and dream of rock and roll

'Cause like a princess she was layin' there
Moonlight dancin' off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She's gonna love me in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me

Her young face was like that of an angel
Her long legs were tanned and brown
Better keep your eyes on the road, son
Better slow this vehicle down

'Cause like a princess she was layin' there
Moonlight dancin' off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me

I put her out in a town that was so small
You could throw a rock from end to end
A dirt-road main street, she walked off in bare feet
It's a shame I won't be passin' through again

'Cause like a princess she was layin' there
Moonlight dancin' off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me

'Cause like a princess she was layin' there
Moonlight dancin' off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While your looking up at me
You're like my favourite damn disease

And I love the places that we go
And I love the people that you know
And I love the way you can't say no
Too many long lines in a row
I love the powder on your nose

And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)

I like the freckles on your chest
And I like the way you like me best
And I like the way you're not impressed
While you put me to the test
I like the white stains on your dress

And I love the way you pass the check
And I love the good times that you wreck
And I love your lack of self-respect
While you passed out on the deck
I love my hands around your neck

And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)
(Why not before, you never tried)
(Gone for good, and this is it)

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While your looking up at me
You're like my favourite damn disease

And I hate the places that we go
And I hate the people that you know

Select songs have always brought back past memories.
I used to find ones that had a particular appeal to my mind set at the time, usually ballads and some high energy depending on the occasion.
Then I wrote my own to document myself TO myself- sort of a self analysis.
Now I play most anything that makes other people happy...or gives them their own memories. It's not at all all about me.
The universal language in more than a few ways.

Wow!, I am impressed!... specially for the spanish spoken bands (the mexican Cafeta Cuba or the chilean Los Prisioneros ). As I said in a previous post in your blog, it REALLY frustrates me the fact of being 4625 miles (7444 kilometers) apart of you (measured with Google Earth!), so not having the chance to know you better, in person, having lunch together, etc.

Anyway, I hope you will have the chance to read this, it's a bit delayed with your last posts.
