American Idle Minds

I never got the fascination with the show "American Idol". I mean in the beginning it has its novelty value with all the poor performers but even that wears off real quick. I never really watched it much a couple of times out of sheer curiosity. I wanted to know how 50Million people could vote for some person to become a star. Yet we would be hard pressed getting that many to vote for the next president. But I guess the world of entertainment is far more important in the long run.

The one episode I saw this season was when there were three left and the votes were in for who was going to the finals. Of course they had to dramatize the fact that with 50Mil voters it was still close. They exclaimed that 3 place had
33.12% then they went on to say that second had
33.24%. Now they took a long pause and got all dramatic before revealing the last number. Now even if you weren't quick enough to get the exact number you had to know it had to be 33.xx%.
Still the crowd gasped when they heard that it was 33.64%. Whether that was forced or just plain ignorance I don't know but I fail to see the surprise there.

Anyway this post is really about another show produced by that awful Simon Cowell. Its called "America's Got Talent". I swear thats the name the damn guy is insulting american intelligence (Oxymoron?) with the poor grammatic title. Should be "America Has Talent" but we are stupid enough to say sounds great.

The show is basically the same as Idol in that they have two "celebrity" judges this time its Brandy and David Hasselhoff and one angry british bloke whose name escapes me at the moment. They have these buttons they press which if they all do kind of gongs the person away. At which point the judges vote whether or not to keep them. The ones that made it include a 68 year old stripper a 9 year old comedian "sap" factor for sure, A juggler who dropped about 4 times and a couple of singers. While the cuttees included a noseflute player, another man who plays bike horns and a three person performance dancing team dressed as pirates.

The only redeeming part of the show is when the talent fought back at the judges. One guy said "When was the last time you had a hit single Brandy" Her lame response was "Hey I'm working on that now"

I was going to watch it tonight to get some material for this post, but a friend asked me to come out. Hell he could have asked me to watch the traffic go by or watch some grass grow and I would have found it more interesting. I gotta thank him for saving me.

Ok rant done nothing more to see here.

Yeah---and didn't the "snapping fingers" man get passed on to the next competition? Worse, isn't Regis Philbin hosting it? The show is indeed annoying.

I have no use for so-called "reality" shows - even the talent-based ones. I did watch Nashville Star a couple of times, until Buddy Jewell won the prize. I found it to be blatantly disgusting that someone who had spent 20 years in Nashville, making a living at songwriting and cutting demos, was required to enter a freakin' TV show talent contest in order to get a record contract.

I suppose the record companies just couldn't have come to the decision he was a "salable" item on their own? If the guy were good enough to get there via Cable TV, how could he not have been recognized without it? Isn't that the business of the Nashville producers? It's all a SCAM! It's nothing but a method (a piss-poor one, in my book) of selling air time. What's even sadder than this is the fact people actually make this shit happen - by voting! Reminds me too much of that political dog-jive they throw at us every 4 years... and we suck it down as if it were a margarita mixed with Soma.

I have given up on TV with the exception of The Shield (which show, BTW, convinced me that Michael Chiklis IS actually a rather accomplished actor and that there actually IS hope for towns - the likes of Farmington)... and, of course, some of the programing on Comedy Central, the Science Channel and NGC. It hurts too badly to witness the dumbing-down of the american public - with my very own two eyes.

SW3... Regis was annoying 40 years ago and has become more so, now, with all that practice. I think obnoxious is a more apropos word.

i hear ya! i wrote a post on some similar stuff a couple days ago. just mindless poo poo on the tube these days. a rare event to find something that has substance. summer sucks because its all the trash that they couldn't sell in the fall/winter line ups. i remember as a kid before cable we only got channels that the rabbit ears brought in on 2-13, then came cable and much later on into the present we have satellite, digital cable. seems that the more channels there are, the less there is worth viewing.
i think i just came up with a new idea for another post on the subject. tune in later to check it out...

That's why I watch cartoons most of the time. I only watched the first season of American Idol because my roomie and I were too broke to get cable for awhile and Fox was the only channel we could get.

Many years ago, George Carlin nailed it when he said,
"Think about how dumb the average person is. Half the
people out there are dumber than that."
It's no wonder "Reality" shows have such an audience.

How else can we explain Duh-bya getting elected for a 2nd term?

I haven't even heard of this show. It sounds like an updated version of "The Gong Show." When is it on and what channel?

SW3: Yes to both accounts its ridiculous some of the talent that is getting passed on to the next round now if only we could buzz regis.....

Gossip: Sadly I think David Hasselhoff might be the one redeeming part of the show. Thats reaching honestly.

Solar: LOL Well apparently they can't even tell what the american public will lap up as talent next. So they have to let the people decide for themselves. Whatever did happen to scouting for talent now they have to make this long drawn out production where only one person gets a record deal. Where the ones who are the hottest or have the most touching story win instead of being based solely on their talent.~sigh~

DBG: I hear you DBG this crap is awful and there is more and more fluff on television. I rarely even turn mine on but a friend asked me to watch this show because it was so funny . I think he needs his head examined as the only funny part was the judges getting ripped a couple of times.

SSS: Once networks have an idea that works they try to exploit and abuse the show till you are sick of it. If they could think of a way of having it on 5 days a week without playing out the show they would. A while back I would have gotten TIVO but now theirs only like 3 or 4 shows that are truly worth watching to me.

Fit: Not at all TV is way over-rated and has severely dumbed down over the past decade or so. I don't even think to turn it on anymore. In fact most of the TV that I do watch someone calls me and asks me to do so. Even then they have to argue with me to get me to turn it on.

LS: AI was a good idea at first however the show has gotten too dragged out and the judges now see themselves as gods who can make or break a career. Which well unfortunately they are.... this season I watched a couple of episodes and they tried to play on the emotions of people to pick their favorite which shouldn't be what the show is about.

Real36: Fox as your only choice well at least there were highlights to your week like the Simpsons and Family guy if they were running it back then.

Rudy: Ah yes I remember that quote and how fitting for america. Hell they are probably the target audience for about 70% of shows on today because very few anyone with half a brain would be put off by some of the nonsense on TV.

Thats basically what it is with the AI spin on it as people will get the chance to vote on it later. Its on NBC on wednesday nights 8 till 10 they did an encore of the first episode so I imagine they might do the same next week.

LOL, this show is hysterical, and yes it's an updated Gong sHow (which I loved when I was a kid!).

But it's true, more people get excited about AI than they do about their own government!

I have to admit it, though, I am going to try out for American Idol this time around. And if I make it you better be adding to those 50million votes!!

Ive never bothered watching shows like this excpet when its the celebrity ones for charity. Theyre usually funny.

I actually like Simon Cowell.

The 'America's got talent'....well it is gramatically correct as America's is 'America has'. So if the apostrophe wasnt placed where it is the title will read 'America has got talent'.

Phoe...

As you say, if America has got talent, wouldn't America have gotten talent at some point? But then if America did have talent, wouldn't America be possessed of talent? And that would certainly imply America's talent which is to say... America has talent - but America ain't got no talent; which is why they called it America's got talent, instead of America's talent.
