The Future

If people could see their future
They have no future
- Quotes from the movie Paycheck

Just watched Paycheck on cable. Its an action thriller about this guy who invents a machine which allows an insight into the future. When he sees the bleak future that lies ahead and how people will react to such forecast, he decided for the good of mankind that he destroys the machine. Of course what follows is the usual adrenaline pumping gun fights, car chases, fist fights etc. It helps to have Ben Afflect and Urma Thurman as the leads.(I can't decide who I like better )

But what really intrigued me was the essence of the script.

If a person could really look into his future, then his life would be lived out as what is deem is going to happen. In other words, the future is acted out as forecasted and is no longer a sequence of chance events.

When uncertainty is removed from a person's life, with it goes the basic human feelings of hope, aspiration and the meaning of existence.

I thought the movie was cool and the scriptwriter was poetic in engineering such deep thinking into what could have been easily otherwise a mindless action thriller.

Taking it into the local context, imagine I could see into my future and that I could see that at the end of it all, my sexual overtures to the babe in my office would come to nought. Then I probably wouldn't even bother to put any effort to woo her and just move on to another woman who may be able to accept me with minimal efforts expended.

But it is only with hope and a dream that we will reach for the stars. This hope will make us extend beyond our known capability. What is life without experiencing the art of pursuit, rejection and the uncertainties of whether she loves me or not?

Yes, if I have a choice, I don't want others to tell me what is my future. I would want to create and make happen my own future.

Oh, another note. The esscence of the future is change. To put it in another way, non-linearity and unpredictability.

I just reread Future Shock last weekend, so I am influenced by it at the moment.

Of course, if I had read A Brief History of Time instead, I would probably feel that everything is already predetermined since the Big One, so I should just veg out in front of the TV and watch endless reruns of "The Simple Life".

Paris Hilton is therapeutic when you have big thoughts like these.

Bingo Jazz, its because the future is so unpredictable that we will always look forward to it or dread it.

Hmmm ... future shock is an interesting book... was way ahead of its time, I think I read it about a decade or more ago.... good book ... Haven't read brief history on time though... maybe I ought to take a look at it

Hmmmm... are we talking like a couple of nerds?
