Everyone has it
Some extreme, some mild
Sometimes it takes hold of you
And makes it the person you are
At other times it makes you a person you are not
But at its best, it makes you what you want to be

As a human, I too have my vulnerability. The ironic thing is that my greatest insecurity lies in the fact that I am often not perceived as feeling insecure. Only realized it when we weathered a professional crisis yesterday.

I was at my wits end, physically exhausted and almost to the point of giving up. But 40 people soldiered on, they believed that I had a plan, they believed in me and they carried on with the project without question. I could see it in their eyes that they were tired but they persevered. Appointments were cancelled, most voluntarily put in overtime and executives rolled up their sleeves to help the operations staff.

Initially, the feeling of insecurity was overwhelming. I felt unable to live up to expectations and how to tell my staff that I am also proned to failure. But watching them work, each busy with their area of expertise, staying focused on getting the job done was inspiring. My feelings of insecurity changed to anger, an anger not to let down people who believed in me.

Fortunately, all went well and we even managed to shut down operations way before midnight. It was a close call, I was lucky this time but again I know that expectations of me will have gone up again. Funny, no one to share it with and had to express it in a blog.

But it was an inspiring night, the feeling was tremendous, almost like a night of unforgetable sex. And like after having good sex, I could sleep like a baby.

As the famous quote goes, "familiarity breeds contempt". If left to our selves most people would seldom rise above their doubts and achieve all that we are capable of. The roar of the crowd often propels atheletes and actors to a greatness that they didn't know they had.

People need leaders and we all want to believe that our leaders are confident and not haunted by doubt. Even if you make a mistake they will forgive you, but weakness and indecsion are unforgiveable. You are right not to share your doubts with them. Strength in the face of challenges and adversity provides others with optimism and purpose. And that is what makes a leader worth following.

Funny that this is your topic for today -- i'm a bit too sick to write, words are fuzzy, but my topic for the day is "doubt"...
