En Route

En Route
‘There is a hill somewhere here, I want you to see;
a hill and a valley, I found a secret grapevine garden’,
your freckles sparkle fresh from a smile so intimate,
a young child winks through cheeks inviting my eyes.
You let me drive the blue ’94 Dodge although you know
I love to watch how you manoeuvre the sturdy vehicle
with subtle gestures, a contrast with which you write your life.

‘There is a hill somewhere here, I want you to see;
a hill and a valley, I found a secret grapevine garden’,
passing the plastic bottle with water; I hesitate to drink:
and touch only the top with the resonance of your lips
that smothers every memory, thought or rational idea.
You feed me grapes although you know I need you
to slowly suck them out of my mouth, with grace and obedience
a duo that makes you stronger than anyone.

‘There is a hill somewhere here, I want you to see;
a hill and a valley, I found a secret grapevine garden’,
you hit me on my shoulder much stronger than you
think you are. ‘Found it!’ with a confident and playful
smile you point: a tree, some clouds that of course all
look like you, in the distance three rows: the secret grapevine.

We both cry;
realizing a child
will be born within a year.
