at last, Austria......

I made it. Came to the land of my ancestors. Not just the country, but the very region from where my grandparents emigrated in the bitter days after World War I.
Had a nice lazy morning back in Udine, took a stroll and what do you know? found a nice shoe store, thought I'd reward myself for the successful progress lately and ended up with 4 pairs. These are pieces of art, not just shoes. Cost me a small fortune, but will impress the ladies back home. Well, until they set their eyes on my endowment, anyway. Quit bragging, Eric.
Drove up to Austria in the afternoon, getting into more snow than ever, but they are doing a good job cleaning their highways (and building them, for that matter, those are pieces of art, too, the way they master seemingly insuperable obstacles nature has put in the way). Got to a small town in the late afternoon whose name is Faak, and it is pronounced just the way we say fuck! and I decided to take it as an omen and stay for the night. Found a nice hotel (they have multi-star hotels here in small villages which you would never expect to find, courtesy of the German tourists who are flooding this lovely part of the world.) 4 stars, with indoor swimming pool, sauna, solarium, gym.....might even stay a bit longer and even try some skiing again. This is not the downhill area, but they have nice facilities for cross-country. My next scheduled appointment, in Vienna, is on Monday, so there is no need to hurry, and still time for my roots research.
There are more than one group of German, Dutch and probably Swedish (they booze the most) tourists staying here. The German group looks particularly interesting, looks like a bowling club on vacation, mostly people of my age or above, exactly my turf. With a number of seemingly single ladies, too! Watched them a bit during dinner, smiled at some of the ladies, maybe I'll see them soon again in gym, pool, or sauna....that's where I am heading now. Bye, sweet diary, and maybe I can report good news later!
