Mr. Frost's breath

When Mr. Frost blows his winterly cold breath over our country, the people here instantly start to search for their skates.
Public parking lots get set under water, special designed fields have already flooded with water since end November and the ‘rayon-hoofden’ search for their ice-thickness measuring tools.

Famous painters have spend days or maybe months to put the right amount and colour of paint on their linnen to capture all the fine details of people on skates during the Golden centuries. Holland covered with snow, ice on the channels, and happy fooks celebrating moments off.

Although some have not even been present in this country, they have heard about it or seen flashes on TV about the Elfsteden-tocht. This traditional ice-speed skating tour over more then 200 km’s is to be found special. Many prepare for this race and even alternative tracks have been used in Finland or Austria.

When this tour will be raced (can be done even in late Februari), ages of deep frost have terrorised our country. Manufacturers of sausages have prepared extra stock. Hot chocolate milk is the national drink then and not one single hotel room is available during the day’s before the start. ‘It geet Oan’ is one of the famous words from the committee chairman when he announces the real starting date.
What is so funny about all this fuzz ?

I have been reminded on this skating tour by one of the members here. So even there this Elfstedendtocht is mentally stored. Though seeing on here how people are commonly dressed I think we will have many casualties with frozen body parts. Who needs to get warmed ?

I would *love* to see that race but it can not be run every year because it does not freeze hard enough every year here in Holland.

When was the last year that they raced?
