As Promised - A Follow-up In the Local Shootings

In,Drive Bys..., I blogged about a crazy man shooting at the houses in our little community.

As a follow-up I blogged, Suspect Arrested.. A suspect was arrested.

Today is yet another follow-up. Sundays January 29th local paper released the name of the suspect arrested.

Shootings suspect arrested
By Lindsey Stockton, assistant editor

Working hand in hand, law enforcement agencies in Graham County arrested a suspect in the shootings that have plagued Gila Valley residents during the last two months.

Michael Kenneth James, 28, of Graham County was arrested Friday night at 7:20 p.m. in the Cluff Ranch area south of Pima.

“I think I can speak for all the police chiefs and myself in saying that Graham County citizens have a lot to be proud of,” Graham County Sheriff Frank Hughes said. “The law enforcement officers worked together to bring this guy in.”

The officers recovered two weapons from James - a handgun and a shotgun - which are the same types of weapons used in the seven shootings.

Two warrants were issued for James' arrest. The first warrant was out of the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, which charges him with three counts of discharging a firearm at a residential structure, class two felonies, and one count of criminal damage, a class six felony. The bond on that warrant is set at $100,000.

The second warrant is out of the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, which charges James with three additional counts of discharging a firearm at a residential structure. The bond for that warrant is set at $50,000.

James is in custody at the Graham County Jail. The case has been sent to the Graham County Attorney for review

In today’s paper, Wednesday, February 2, 2006 paper, this story was released:

Alleged shooter to have hearing today
By Lindsey Stockton, assistant editor

Michael K. James, the man police officers believe shot into several houses across the Valley and killed a horse, will appear before a judge for his preliminary hearing Wednesday.

The preliminary hearing is like a "mini-trial," Assistant Graham County Attorney Allen Perkins said.

"In this hearing, the defendant goes before a justice of the peace (JOP), and we usually put one officer on the stand who goes through the evidence. In this proceeding, hearsay is allowed," he said. "The JOP will then determine if there is sufficient evidence to send the case upstairs to the superior court."

If the judge concludes there is not enough evidence to bind the defendant, then he will be released until further evidence is presented.

On Tuesday, James will go before the judges in precincts one and two for initial hearings. At this time, he will be advised of the charges against him, appointed counsel, and the court calendar for his case will be set.

Perkins said he didn't want to speculate, but the charges filed against James are not set in stone - some could be dropped and others could be added.

James was arrested on six charges of discharging a firearm at a residential building, a class two felony, and one charge of criminal damage, a class 6 felony.

"You don't get much more serious than a class two felony without killing somebody," Perkins said. "He has six (class two felonies) filed against him, so he is facing some heavy charges."

The detectives working on the case are processing evidence and preparing for the preliminary hearing.

Crazy thing is, he is the cousin to one of his victims. Yes, he is indeed a dirtbag.

I am glad that they caught him... are you sleeping easier now? I remember you said that it wasn't easy to get past things like this for you. Hugs.
Yes, I usually get over things when I blog about them. It seems to help get it off my chest and out of my mind.
