The Butterfly Affect

The Butterfly Affect

Has anyone heard this term before? Should we even care? Of what possible significance could one lowly butterfly have on our lives you might ask? It turns out… it could be “plenty” of significance.

I do not run in scientific circles so I will try and tell the story as best I can from what I know. One day someone came up with this idea. I have no idea if it was a man or woman or what their position in life was. But to get back to the story, this individual theorized that the beating of a butterfly’s wings on one continent could have a major influence on the weather on another continent. I don’t know all the scientific jargon but it has to do with molecules bumping up against other molecules and creating some kind of cascading affect. I’m not making this up, you can do a search on the internet to discover it for yourself. Just do a search on ”butterfly affect”.

At first, the scientific community scoffed at this idea. Over time though, more study was done and now the idea is accepted more readily.

I’m sure the victims of hurricane Katrina would not be too pleased to hear that their misfortune was the result of the actions of one lowly “butterfly”. Do you think the butterfly had any knowledge of what it was doing? Or the consequences it was creating? I cannot really answer that question. I do believe that there is a force that governs and maintains order in this Universe and it works in mysterious ways.

So now, if the actions of one little butterfly could have such far-reaching affects, I have to ask myself, “How do I affect the world”? Humans are much bigger and more capable of exerting much more influence on our surroundings than such a small creature.

If I were to put my own spin on this kind of occurrence, I would have to say that, every thought we think, every action we take or don’t take, could have far reaching implications way beyond our imagination. To think how powerful such a small creature could be, how much more powerful could a human be? It reminds me that I need to be mindful of my own thoughts and to try and envision what far reaching possibilities my thoughts and actions might have. But these thoughts are for those of us who are “awake”. For those of you who are “sleeping”, this is a “wake up” call. We all have free will and that choice is left up to you.

We are all “butterflies” in a sense but much more powerful. Just think about it.
