Over Tipping (An Ode)

I over tipped
Because she was beautiful

Because she was everything they wanted her to be
That she wanted to be
To make me forget
If only for an hour or two
That I was me

Dyed blonde hair with dark black roots:
`How I always found that appealing`
Taut tanned skin
With the gym membership transparently…
…Apparent

With the perfectly placed smile,
Wink,
And nod,
All aimed at my debit card
But I didn’t care
Not any more
So another round I ordered

Because she was Sue…
With immature naiveté of love and forever
Of romance and burning embers
Of promise and regret
Of first broken heart I’ve yet to forget

Because she was Erin
With her whimsical charm
With her laugh of disarm
With her wanton need
And my ignorance to heed

Because she was MaggieMay
With her satirical view
Her razor sharp wit finely hewed
Her tongue sharp as an iron cast shard
And my inability to totally disregard

For she was Kim and Kathy
Anna and Amy
Cheryl and Kim again…
…She was the nameless few
And the desired plenty

And as my head spun ‘round again
And on a full moon-lit night
As the speed limit plummeted below
As my thoughts soared from sight
I reflected on her face
As the accelerator raced
On a back country road
As Flickerstick crowed:

The Tourist plays what you want him to play

And I thought:

A countless sunrises
A countless fireplaces
A countless stars on a mid summer’s night
A countless flakes from a winter’s dream
A countless currents from an electric storm
A countless wassails from a savior born
A countless candles over dinner served
A countless Sunday drives into the unknown
A countless vacations which to plan
A countless eves lost in embrace
A countless kisses to share
A countless embraces to entwine
A countless caresses to ease the pain
A lifetime of reverence which to gain

So I over tipped
By a dollar or two
Considering all she gave me
It was the least
I could do

Ah, Its you again, Your Angel Feathers and your Blood Stains...

Time to implement the "now tip no service" philosophy!

Great Ode Doc, I hope this doesn't insult you but it reminds me of Harry Chapin

docdirk replies on 6/12/2006 5:20 pm:
On the contrary; I like Harry Chapin's stuff! (His song-writing... not his driving!)

Nice one, Doc!

I used to be a waiter. Nowadays I still tip a waiter or waitress for good service just to show I appreciate, and also to remind myself never to forget that I was once a waiter too and it wasn't an easy job.

I too am guilty of over tipping, even when it isn't called for. Like you: Been there, done that!

I'm not familiar with his work, but I'll take your word that the comparison is a good one.

(It is a good one... right?!?!?)

I over tip too....but not because of looks....because of the service. Nicely written Doc.

Mostly, I over tip out of pity!

Oh yeah...

From 'Pictures of the Gone World'
Number 8
by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

It was a face which darkness could kill
in an instant
a face as easily hurt
by laughter or light

'We think differently at night'
she told me once
lying back languidly

And she would quote Cocteau

'I feel there is an angel in me' she'd say
'whom I am constantly shocking'

Then she would smile and look away
light a cigarette for me
sigh and rise

and stretch
her sweet anatomy

let fall a stocking

I really like that - simple and pleasing, yet, eloquent. I'll have to research him a bit more.
