Christmas Cards are Sexist!

OK, this has been a pet peeve of mine for years.

My "family" is the kind that always includes cards with our gift-giving. Even though they hardly get read or noticed, a card is expected to accompany a gift much like salt to pepper, peanut butter to jelly, "free love" to child support.

But that's fine, I go with the flow. I buy the cards, for everyone, every year, even though they seem to cost more than the average gift these days, you know, PS2, BMW, Bahama time share.

Buying the card is not my problem. Content of the card is. For a father, brother, brother-in-law, etc, cards are typically fun, humorous, joyful. However, cards aimed for women, IE mothers, sisters, etc. are soooo "heartfelt" that they typically cross over to dour and depressing. What gives??? I know the ladies love the honest emotion of love, family and sharing. But have you read some of this sap? It's horrendous. It's embarrassing. It's un-buyable.

The same goes for birthday cards. For a guy, you can find any number of cards that read much like this; "You're fat and stupid. Happy birthday anyway." You give this card to a guy, you both laugh, he tells you how ugly you are, and the party goes on. But a woman's birthday card? I'm sorry, the meaning-of-the-universe-found-in-your-eyes is NOT what I'm giving my mother or sister. Ever. They want to enjoy the Holiday, not seek out their reason for being.

Buying the right card is far more difficult than buying the right gift. You need a machete to wade through the horrible poetry and a life preserver to swim through the sap.

Enough already. I'm calling for an all out boycott of cheesy Holiday cards. No more!

Ah, Its you again, Your Angel Feathers and your Blood Stains...

I just take the front of last years cards and glue them to a folded piece of poster board. I then write exactly what I want it to say. I too hate the sappiness of the ones addressed to anyone. I also download cartoons, print them, and add any caption I want.

And yes, the world is sexist. Think about this: why are men so eager to spend money on sex? (ie gold membership in AdultFriendFinder, prostitutes, porn, strippers...) Why do men undervalue their sexuality so much that they pay to give it while women can charge so much for what is really the same thing?

I'm with you...get 'em a hardback book (about the same price as a card) and write your message inside the cover. Later

Why don't you get a box of Christmas cards (they're always on sale at least half off this time of year) and add your own message inside. You can personal those kinds of cards a lot easier even if all you do is write, "to the best mother/sister/brother/father in the whole wide world." Ok, it doesn't have to be that cheesey and you don't have to do it with everyone. Just your mom because mom's dig that kind of shit. We want to know that we've done/did a good job and that we mean something to you. It's nice to be acknowledged, if you will. It'll save you tons of dinero!
