And I Quote....

I thought I was going to be the starting center fielder for the Boston Red Sox. Life sucks. Get a fucking helmet, all right? Happiness comes in small doses, folks. It's a cigarette or a chocolate cookie or a five second orgasm. That's it.

Denis Leary said that. First from his early 1990's comedy tour No Cure for Cancer, and more recently in his Playboy interview. And, while on the surface, it may appear to be highly negative; I've always found a great deal of comfort in the thought.

It seems - at least to me - that life is a neverending series of things we have to do. Face it, if you could do anything you wanted, anytime you wanted, how much of the stuff you do every day would you still do? If you answered a lot or most of it... God bless ya! But for the rest of us, life is mainly about taking care of what needs taking care of.

But what do we really live for? What are the things that we circle on our calendars? That's why we circle them, you know. They are out of the ordinary, irregular and enjoyable. Vacations, social gatherings, maybe even dates.

But those are rare, or at least not every day experiences. What Leary spoke of (I believe) are those every day moments that cause us to smile regardless of all else whirling about us. His cigarette. His cookie. His five-second orgasm.

In my case, I am grateful every day that I go to a job that I don't despise. And, when I get there, I'm elated that I don't have a "boss." I also enjoy watching my team (in any sport) play, whether they suck (which most of mine do) or not. I enjoy my music. Currently, I'm loving the new Def Leppard CD - a collection of covers from 1970's glam-rock bands. In the old days, I would have felt the need to explain to my Metallica-loving friends why I'm so into this disc. Today, I don't care. The guitar on their cover of The Kink's Waterloo Sunset mesmerizes me. Their version of Blondie's Hangin' on the Telephone keeps my toes a'tappin for a solid 2:30 minutes. It just does. No explanation needed.

I also enjoy Tuesday nights at 10:00pm when Leary's show Rescue Me comes on. Or, in the fall when LOST returns. And, speaking of fall, I love nearly everything about it. I also enjoy a good, strong cup of coffee, a good, strong imported beer, the perfect flip of an omlette, the spicy tang of jalapeno peppers, the subtle response of a woman's body and the Sunday morning knowledge that the alarm clock isn't going to ring that day.

Those are some of my little things. What works for you? Your five-second orgasm? Your chocolate cookie? I'd really be interested in knowing. I might just enjoy them as well and not even
know!

Ah, Its you again, Your Angel Feathers and your Blood Stains...

Making my cats purr
Stroking the cats
Making someone smile
Making someone laugh
Stopping someone's tears
A journey home on the motorway (M25) that flows freely
A cold glass of wine on a hot summers day
Sharing some time with someone very special
Getting a bunch of flowers just because
Hearing those three words
Listening to the sound of the rain
A thunderstorm
The sweet, fresh smell of the grass after the rain

There's more but that's a few

Mistress Innuendo
Taking what you say and turning it into something naughty !!

Great list!!! I also love thunderstorms and the smell of grass - although it usually makes me sneeze!

What? No five second orgams for you too? Maybe more like 3 second?

WHat a great post JJ. Being grateful is a wonderful state to be in. Sometimes it's easy to lose track of what makes us grateful. I'll wakeup, think "I hate my job, I don't want to go to work." But just easily I could have been born in some 3rd world country, living in a hut, watching my children die from malaria, barely squeeking by, by doing the exact same thing everyday.

My life really changed about 2 years ago when I took my current job. Prior to this, I used to hate waking up every morning to go to work. Life sucks when the first thought that comes to your mind every morning is how badly life sucks.

Knowing that I helped someone feel better
Being told Thank You, you did a good job!

I always like to focus on the positive things in life and not the negative but its tough when you live with a negative person!

I'll have a cafe, mocha, vodka, valium latte to go please!

Good girls go to heaven.....bad girls go down!!

I am grateful for the sun, even though it brings scolding hot temps to AZ. I am very grateful for the rain because it's few and far between.

I am grateful for my kids and boyfriend. I am grateful for the blogs and those who come to visit me.

I agree with you on most of what you are saying and can't even argure the points I don't agree with. Damn I'm right there with you on Rescue me, the coffee, the beer, and Autumn! Throw in a great book, hanging out late afternoons sipping a Margarita or Martini outside, and even my latest passion Soduko puzzles!

docdirk replies on 7/17/2006 5:35 pm:
Yes... Rescue Me kicks ass!!!

And, I'd be with you on the book thing, but this damn blogging has seriously cut into my reading time!

Say my brotha, can I borrow a copy of your jive soul classics?

Whats this thing about playboy having articles?

docdirk replies on 7/17/2006 5:36 pm:
Apparently they have added words & stuff to Playboy. Which is a good thing. I was worried Leary was going to be this month's centerfold!!!

Well if Katrina and the Flood taught me anything, it is to enjoy the small things. Like eating desert first. Celebrating the fact that Savacenter is now open till midnight, that my Walgreens is OPEN even if it is only till 9pm. Now life would be complete if the Taco Bell would come back!!!!!!!!

Taco Bell - The true test of modern society!

I'm also for eating dessert first. In fact, I say eat dessert ONLY!!

All of the above...except the show Lost...never got into it. I understand your post and mostly agree...I do however resent having other people controll my time, and not being truely free.

docdirk replies on 7/20/2006 5:52 pm:
Yes, true freedom is the ultimate quest. But how many of us actuallt attain it, and how would one judge it? And would your definition by the same as mine, or the next?

Damn, this is starting to make my head ache!!!
