Shadows on the Wall

Shadows on the Wall

The tap, tap tapping on my window pane,
Humid air whispering to moist ears,
Frenetic shapes flickering wildly,
On ghostly walls blurred by tears.

Throwing back my covers,
In a lucid patch between hellish dreams,
I pant and wallow chokingly,
In a dry throat silenced scream.

Loose shapes rise to greet me,
As I stumble towards an invisible door,
Scraping out for walls to guide me,
But the walls lead quickly to the floor.

Shuddering I grasp a chilly basin,
As vomit graps me from within,
The wretching with each exhalation,
As I rock from limb to limb.

I swear that drink will be the last,
I promise I’ll break the fall,
I wish that I was still sober,
As shadows dance about the wall.
