"Push The Button" - What Will They Sing About Next?

Many years ago I read the book “The Color Purple.” I was probably 18, and the book had been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature. Being an aspiring writer, and not sure if I had ever read a Pulitzer Prize winning novel before and I was very curious.

In one of the most memorable chapters the book’s heroine learns to pleasure herself, she is taught by her husband’s mistress. The mistress refers to her clitoris as her ‘button.” I can honestly say I had never read anything like it before. These weren’t nubile teens experimenting. This was one mature sexually experienced woman educating and teaching another woman about her body and the pleasure it can experience. The way it is written is tender, and funny, and highly erotic. To this day when I hear the word “button” I smile, it’s kind of like an inside joke to me.

So tonight I’m flipping thru the channels and I catch Letterman, and there is a cast of black females on the tail end of performing a musical number and they are repeating the phrase “Push The Button.” I smile … and discover that sure enough, it’s a number from the new musical “The Color Purple.”

Can you imagine a whole musical number devoted to the subject of a woman learning about, and experiencing the pleasures of masturbation! I might have to go to NYC to see this. Anyone want to go with?

Yeah, don't. There are other things to see in NYC that celebrate the clit than something Oprah produced.

LET'S GO METS!!!

Gosh, I remember, years ago when I was young... the "Tropic of Cancer" was the most erotic piece of literature available.

I am sure you'll receive many offers, I heart, but not all of those offers will be real. I live a short drive from NYC; I'd be happy to accompany you to the play. NYC is always fun, and even more fun when shared.

Happy New Year to you

There are plenty of songs celebrating masturbation:

Cyndi Lauper - She Bop
Divynals - I Touch Myself
Madonna - Get Into The Groove
Prince - Darling Nikki

I could handle a trip to NYC. Ummmm, Broadway and pizza

Funny, I flipped past that when it was on and thought it amusing they were making a musical based on that book. Then when I started to read your blog entry I assumed you were wondering the same thing - now I want to try to catch the re-run of the show just to see them sing it and see how it plays - is it obvious what they are signing about?
