Behind every man...

Barbara Walters of 20/20 did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that the women customarily walked 5 paces behind their husbands. She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands.

From Ms. Walters vantage point, despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to walk even further back behind their husbands and are happy to maintain the old custom. Ms Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked "Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?"

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes and without hesitation said, "Land mines."

Moral of the story: Behind every man is a smart woman.

This was sent to me in email a few weeks ago. I read it yesterday when cleaning my inbox, and it just amused me too much. I almost didn't share it, but shadowshiver's comment 2 posts back "behind every good guy is a good woman"... I had to post it after all.

I always heard it as...

Behind every successful man is a surprised woman! - Maryon Pearson

Of course, based on my current mood I think Oscar has it right:

Bigamy? It's having one wife too much...
Monogamy? It's the same -- Oscar Wilde

Hi,
It's neither an old custom nor the land mines.
It actually is the honour that women have for their husbands.
Not only in Afghanistan but almost in all Muslim countries it's the same.
And yes, I agree to - There definitely is a woman behind a man -
which in other words is his wife or the closest girlfriend.

It is an old joke, and has several variations, but it is one that I still enjoy.
