A special thanks...


...to a certain friend who told me to go out and have fun, and not cancel my plans in favor of more sleep.

I'm a member of a medieval society, that studies to re-create and re-enact the Middle Ages. Society for Creative Anachronisms. The local group has many ongoing (weekly/monthly) activities, such as 'arts night' 'dance practice' and 'culinary guild meeting'. I've been a member of the culinary guild for over a year, but have participated in nothing more than the email list. So tonight i went to my first meeting... it was so much fun!! getting to visit with old friends i've not seen in almost a year, and meeting new friends. (most of my year is spent sleeping in the day, class in evenings, working all night... including weekend nights. rather clashes with the schedules of everybody i know). i'm so happy i didn't miss it!!! of course, i may have to stop for a nap during my drive home, but that's ok.

The theme tonight (well: 8/9) was "Period Cheese Recipes". I made a Brie Tart from the Rennaissance period. By the exclamations made, everybody loved it. It's simple to make, but Brie is expensive. If anybody is interested in the recipe:

Brie Tart:

8 inch uncooked pie pastry
1 lb. young brie cheese
6 egg yolks, beaten
1/ 8 tspn. saffron
3/ 4 tspn. light brown sugar
3/ 8 tspn. powdered ginger
salt

Bake pie pastry at 425*F for 10 minutes; let cool (i think it's ok to skip this step).
Remove rind from brie, then combine brie with remaining ingredients in blender. Add salt to taste. Pour liquid into pastry shell, and bake at 350*F for 30-40 minutes, until set and brown on top.

I think, however, I will submit the request to not have "cheese" as a theme again lol. The variety of food was wonderful, but it was 'overkill'.

(update: i *think* i fixed the typo i was so nicely notified of... then humorously notified of. i still don't see it, but??? hope it's fixed)

Not sure I would try something that had 4 limp willies in ingredients lol. JK. I am one of those guys that have drifted in and out of the SCA for the past 10 years. I will participate for several months at a time, maybe a year, then go on to something else. I have learned to fight pretty well though. No knightship yet...until I am ready to dedicate my life to the SCA lol...
